Hogwarts Legacy: RX 7900 XTX Performs 30% Better Than RTX 4090

Taking Lead With Huge Margin Despite No New Drivers

Hogwarts Legacy’s release is quickly approaching; at the same time game is also reaching the top of Steam’s best-selling charts and becoming one of the best-selling consoles game on Amazon.

Last night, we covered that nearly 500k concurrent players were playing it on Steam via Digital Edition 3 days early release, so we can expect this number to cross over 1 million in a couple of hours once the game is officially released on all platforms.

Nvidia and Intel has released new drivers to support the game. In contrast, AMD hasn’t released any new driver, and it turns out that they won’t need it either because, without any specific new driver, the graphics cards from red camp has the upper hand in performance.

The data focuses on two flagship graphics cards, GeForce RTX 4090 and Radeon RX 7900 XTX. In principle, Radeon RX 7900 XTX is a direct competitor to GeForce RTX 4080. Still, in Hogwarts Legacy, it gives competition to the flagship graphics card from Nvidia by offering around 30% better performance.

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX is up to 40FPS faster than GeForce RTX 4090 at 1080p, Ultra Setting, and no Ray Tracing. The NVIDIA drivers again overhead on the processor/RAM, limiting performance. This inevitably leads to the graphics card failing to get its full potential, mainly because it is waiting for orders from the processor, which is overloaded.

And the worst thing is that we will not see the CPU at 100%, which is expected on 1080p resolution; on the contrary, it is performing below expectations from both the graphics card and processor end because the driver is partially collapsing, in principle, memory, and VRAM.

Due to Overhead, NVIDIA GPUs drop their load percentage slightly above 50%, while AMD achieves more than 80%, which is usual. In any case, none reaches 99% load, indicating that the game could soon receive patches to optimize its performance.

In the case of AMD, the fact of not having a driver with an optimized profile is excused, but seeing what NVIDIA has achieved. Surely we will see a hotfix from Nvidia in a few days when they find the problem and restore performance where it should; in the meantime, it is time to lower settings or activate DLSS 3 on the RTX 40 to compensate.
