Story Highlight
  • Asha Sharma plans to turn Xbox into the world’s biggest entertainment hub.
  • She will achieve this by tapping deeper into Hollywood, with over a dozen adaptations now in development.
  • The CEO argues that gaming is the top entertainment now, so it will also dominate the industry.

Xbox is undergoing various strategic shifts after new boss Asha Sharma took the reins, some good and some bad. The brand has already streamlined its multiplatform strategy to embrace exclusives again. However, Xbox’s new ambition is much broader than gaming.

In a new interview, Asha Sharma shares her vision to turn Xbox into the world’s biggest entertainment company, not just a gaming behemoth. The CEO will expand deeper into Hollywood by leveraging the success of Minecraft and Fallout adaptations.

Why it matters: The new leadership wants to push Xbox to dominate the entire entertainment industry. However, all this would only be possible after the gaming brand recovers from years of damage.

Entertainment Weekly also reported that Xbox already has over a dozen TV and film adaptations in the works, as it expands into the Hollywood space. A few of these shows are completely unannounced for now.

Regardless, speaking to the publication, Asha Sharma accepts that the new generation embraces gaming as the top form of entertainment. Therefore, it will push to dominate the competitive market with its tentpole franchises moving forward.

The next generation, their No. 1 form of entertainment is play. […] So we will continue to meet players where they are.

The CEO plans to begin dominating the entertainment scene by resetting and resizing the gaming brand first. For that, she is expected to make the grim choice to hold large-scale layoffs and possibly close multiple studios in the coming weeks.

Asha Sharma also defended the looming layoffs in the same interview, clarifying that every tech company is facing them now.

All in all, Xbox has a long way to go before it recovers, let alone becomes the world’s leading entertainment hub. Microsoft has its own plans to spin off Xbox as a separate company if it fails to bounce back, after all.
