- Microsoft is seemingly considering spinning Xbox out as a standalone company.
- The gaming brand could also be turned into a wholly owned subsidiary, but Microsoft would hold control in that case.
- Combining the Xbox brand with other partners is also being discussed to create a joint venture.
It’s an open secret that the Xbox console business is in a very bad spot compared to its rivals, but new leadership is making some wild moves to help it flourish. It appears that Microsoft is even considering changing the entire structure of its gaming brand in the future.
A new report now details that Microsoft could spin Xbox out as a standalone company, but less volatile alternatives to reorganize the brand are also being internally discussed. Regardless, Xbox as we know it might end if these plans are realized moving forward.
Why it matters: Despite reassurances by executives, Xbox is in a tough spot after its heavy multiplatform push failed to bring the desired results. The mounting losses might push Microsoft to take drastic measures that threaten the gaming brand’s future.

This tidbit comes from The Information, which reports that Xbox could go fully independent, or the tech giant might restructure Xbox into a wholly owned subsidiary instead. It would still be a separate entity, but Microsoft would hold the ultimate control over it.
The third way being discussed is to combine the Xbox company with other partners to create a joint venture. This would let Microsoft invite other partners to run and invest in Xbox. However, this alternative might see the brand lose its core identity as we know it.
Regardless, Microsoft is reportedly considering these options so the Xbox brand can churn out games from its core IPs faster moving forward—think Ubisoft’s recent resizing that aims to achieve the same thing.

So, we might see future Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Halo games launch much faster than before.
These options are just ‘on the table’ for now, and Microsoft has no immediate plans to shift Xbox as we know it. However, we might see them get realized if the struggling console business fails to bounce back enough.
