No GOTY For Starfield At The Big Event!

Story Highlights
  • Starfield was one of the most anticipated games of 2023.
  • Many believed it had the potential to outmatch every other release this year.
  • It will not be part of the race for Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2023.

Few developers can match the prestige of Bethesda Game Studios in the RPG genre. Having gained a reputation for masterfully crafting immersive narratives and open worlds, the studio hoped to impress the industry with Starfield in 2023.

While the game is not Bethesda Game Studios’ best release, it has reached over 11 million players so far. The RPG has also won its first Game of The Year award at Golden Joystick, taking home the biggest award for the Xbox category.

However, Starfield is no longer in the race for the biggest gaming award of 2023. According to Geoff Keighley, it has not been nominated for The Game Awards 2023’s Game of The Year.

Why it matters: Starfield was in development for eight years, leading to incredibly high expectations for the game. Many believed it would be considered Game of the Generation, but it seems the critics nominating games do not agree.

Geoff Keighley has just announced the nominations for various awards at The Game Awards. While Starfield has received a few nominations, the RPG is not being considered for the biggest award of 2023.

Nominations include Resident Evil 4, Baldur’s Gate 3, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. All of these games were among the best-rated releases of the year.

Compared to the nominations, Starfield received a much lower average score on Metacritic. The game launched to decent reviews but did not live up to the amount of anticipation before its release.

It is important to note that these nominations are not based on fan votes or popularity. As Geoff Keighley describes, they are picked by a combined decision from over 120 worldwide media outlets.

While Game of the Year is out of reach, Starfield is likely to be nominated for a few other categories. Therefore, the game is still expected to take home a few awards next month during The Game Awards.

The Game Awards will be held on 7 December. This event will see the biggest games of the year competing for various awards, including the much-anticipated Game of the Year.

In addition to the awards, fans can look forward to various game reveals and trailers, including a potential appearance from Death Stranding 2 after recent teasers from Hideo Kojima.
