Architectural Differences
- Clock Speed: The RTX 4080 Super clocks faster at both base and boost clock, operating at 2295 MHz and up to 2550 MHz. In comparison to that, the RX 7900 XTX has a base clock of 1295 MHz that goes up to the boost clock of 2124 MHz.
- VRAM: The RX 7900 XTX comes with a 24 GB VRAM. Compared to that, the RTX 4080 Super comes with 16 GB of VRAM, which is shameful for a $999 GPU. But, it is the faster GDDR6X VRAM, compared to RX 7900 XTX’s GDDR6 VRAM.
- TDP: This point goes to Nvidia, as the RTX 4080 Super comes with a smaller TDP of 320 watts. The AMD counterpart, RX 7900 XTX comes with a TDP of 355 watts, which is to be expected from a top-of-the-line GPU.
- Process Node: The process node is a specification that our two rival graphics cards appear to have in common. Both AMD and Nvidia seemed to have turned to TSMC for their 5 nm process node for this one.
- Other Technologies: Both GPUs provide their own versions of AI upscaling methods, such as AMD’s FSR and Nvidia’s Frame generation and DLSS 3. However, you can get the best of both worlds with the RTX 4080 Super.
Nvidia just dropped a new $1000 GPU in the market, the RTX 4080 Super. But how does that stack up against AMD’s latest and greatest, the RX 7900 XTX which is being sold at a similar price point? Keep reading to find out as we compare the newly dropped RTX 4080 Super vs RX 7900 XTX and analyse their performance difference in games.
Gaming Tests – 2160p
We have specially designed this testing equipment for this comparison to make certain that there are no bottlenecks and that the majority of the load is placed directly on the graphics cards, ensuring fair competition. This will allow us to keep a close eye on the disparity in performance between the two GPUs without sacrificing any performance.

Cyberpunk 2077
- Cyberpunk 2077 does a good job of utilising the maximum potential of both our GPUs. The RX 7900 XTX is 14% ahead here, with an average of 52 fps. The RTX 4080 Super, at the same time, runs the game at an average of 45 fps.
- The 1% lows had a bigger degree of separation compared to the average fps. This time, the RX 7900 XTX is 18% ahead, giving us a stable average of 42 1% low fps. In comparison to that, the RTX 4080 Super does not go beyond 35 fps.
Starfield
- Playing Starfield was a smoother experience, as both graphics cards were able to deliver a stable 60 fps experience. The RX 7900 XTX ran the game at 64 fps. Roughly four frames behind was the RTX 4080 Super running at 60 fps.
- The 1% lows were also close, as the difference observed was of mere 2 frames. The 1% lows provided by the RX 7900 XTX were around 50 fps. Not far behind was the RTX 4080 Super, yielding an average of 48 1% low fps.
Alan Wake 2
- In a very surprising turn of events, the RTX 4080 Super bags its first lead in Alan Wake 2. It was running the game at an average of 49 fps. The observed difference was negligible though as the RX 7900 XTX was one frame behind at 48 fps.
- 1% lows also had the exact same degree of separation of a single frame. The RTX 4080 Super provided 41 fps in this aspect, whereas the RX 7900 XTX averaged around 40 fps.
Forza Horizon 5
- Forza Horizon 5 allowed our GPUs to finally breathe, as both of them provided a high refresh-rate experience in this game. The RX 7900 XTX was crushing it at 129 fps. Not far behind was the RTX 4080 Super at 123 fps.
- The gameplay appeared quite smoother, as even the 1% lows of both GPUs were hovering in triple digits. The RX 7900 XTX was at 109 fps. The RTX 4080 Super was at 102 fps.
Hogwarts Legacy
- Hogwarts Legacy saw a roughly 11% performance difference in favour of the RX 7900 XTX. This time around, it was running the game at a stable 81 fps average. Its competitor, on the other hand, was running it at 72 fps.
- 1% lows of both GPUs were much closer compared to the average fps. Now, the RX 7900 XTX is only ahead by a couple of frames at 64 fps. The RTX 4080 Super, at the same time, is at 61 fps.
Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora
- Avatar Fronties of Pandora was hard to run on both GPUs. It did end up running 10% better on the RTX 4080 Super, which was at 44 fps. The RX 7900 XTX is behind in this benchmark for the second time, giving us an average of 40 fps.
- The 1% lows were also in favour of the RTX 4080 Super, which was still 8% ahead of its competitor. This time, it gave us an average of 38 1% low fps. Contrary to that, the RX 7900 XTX maxed out at 35 fps.
Red Dead Redemption 2
- Red Dead Redemption 2 runs better on AMD GPUs. The same is the case here, as we see RX 7900 XTX bagging the lead in our final benchmark. It ended up running the game at 104 fps compared to the 103 fps of the RTX 4080 Super.
- A small 4% difference was observed in 1% lows in favour of the RX 7900 XTX, as it runs the game at 87 fps. Compared to that, the 1% lows provided by the RTX 4080 Super were around 83 fps.

Our testing indicates that the RX 7900 XTX is roughly 5.55% better in games compared to the RTX 4080 Super in average fps at 2160p resolution. This data comes from the average of the seven games we benchmarked earlier. The difference is roughly the same in terms of 1% lows as well, where the RX 7900 XTX appears to be 5% ahead.
So far, from what we have seen, it appears that the RX 7900 XTX is the better GPU out of the two. However, you are forgetting that we have not factored in the biggest selling point of the RTX 40X0 series, the DLSS and Frame Generation. When it comes to thermal efficiency, our observation states that the RTX 4080 Super was around 6.8% cooler than the RX 7900 XTX during our gaming benchmark. Hence, it is the more thermal efficient out of the two.

Both GPUs were launched for the MSRP of $999. The RTX 4080 Super was launched recently whereas the RX 7900 XTX has been out for a while. However, since it is the flagship GPU offered by AMD, its price has not seen much change. Therefore, you are unlikely to find either of these graphics cards for cheaper than what they launched for.
What We Recommend
RX 7900 XTX: The latest and greatest of AMD certainly packs a punch when it comes to gaming. If you want a GPU within a thousand-dollar price point which has the best raw performance without any AI upscaling and you don’t care about DLSS and Frame generation, then RX 7900 XTX is recommended for you.
RTX 4080 Super: Despite lagging behind in the benchmarks, it is a bit easier for us to recommend the RTX 4080 Super as compared to the RX 7900 XTX. Because, it has DLSS 3 and Frame generation, which can change the outcome of a gaming benchmark and land gains to RTX 4080 Super something no AMD GPU can replicate.
In the end, both RTX 4080 Super and RX 7900 XTX are very capable GPUs. They can crush any AAA title you throw at them. You just have to decide whether you prioritise actual raw performance or AI upscaling and Ray Tracing.
Frequently Asked Questions
DLSS is limited to Nvidia GPUs only. The RX 7900 XT features AMD’s FSR as an alternate.
Both these GPUs were released as flagship GPUs for the latest series of each manufacturer, so we should not expect a drastic difference in their longevity as both Nvidia and AMD will support them for a while.
