Architectural Differences

1. Frequency: The RX 6900 XT has a base clock of 182MHz, substantially lower than the RTX 4070 Ti Super’s base clock of 2340MHz. Boost clocks are fairly similar with the 4070 Ti Super around 2610MHz and the 6900  XT around 2250MHz.
2. VRAM: Though both GPUs share the same VRAM buffer and bus width, the RTX 4070 Ti Super uses faster GDDR6X memory instead of GDDR6 memory, like the one used with the 6900 XT.
3. Manufacturing Nodes: The RTX 4070 Ti Super uses smaller 5nm processing nodes, whereas the 6900 XT uses slightly more dated 7nm nodes.
4. TDP: The RTX 4070 Ti Super’s rated TDP is 285 watts, slightly lower than the RX 6900 XT’s 300 watts.
5. Other features: The RTX 4070 Ti Super brings AI accelerated upscaling, better RT, and frame generation to its arsenal. The RX 6900 XT offers many of the same features, though not the same efficiency as the 4070 Ti Super’s.

Gaming Benchmarks – 4K

To accentuate the difference between these two GPUs, we have tested them extensively using a test bench, the specifications which you can read below:

• CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4

Cyberpunk 2077

• The 4070 Ti Super ran circles around the older AMD GPU, with an average framerate of 69 FPS, 30% higher than the 53 FPS average of the 6900 XT.
• The 1% lows of the RTX 4070 Ti Super were around 54 FPS, whereas the 6900 XT fell to 41 FPS for its minimum framerates.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

• The difference shrunk in our test of this Ubisoft title, with the 4070 Ti Super getting an average framerate of 88 FPS, 22% higher than the 72 FPS average of the 6900 XT.
• The minimum framerates were around 73 FPS on the 4070 Ti Super, whereas the AMD card plateaued out at an even 60 FPS for its 1% lows.

Red Dead Redemption 2

• The difference took a massive leap with the 4070 Ti Super getting an average framerate of 105 FPS in our test of RDR2, about 60% higher than the 66 FPS average of the 6900 XT.
• 1% lows held around 84 FPS on the Nvidia card, whereas the AMD GPU had a framerate of 45 FPS as its minimum.

Watch Dogs Legion

• The 6900 XT could not keep up with the 4070 Ti Super in this game either, with an average framerate of 59 FPS, around 34% lower than the 79 FPS average of the RTX 4070 Ti Super.
• There were some stutters on the 4070 Ti Super with lows hovering around 55 FPS, which was not much higher than the 47 FPS lows of the 6900 XT.

Horizon Zero Dawn

• Horizon had an average framerate of 115 FPS on the 4070 Ti Super, which showed a 42% difference against the 81 FPS average framerate of the 6900 XT.
• As for the minimum framerates, the 4070 Ti Super had lows of around 82 FPS, substantially smoother than the 62 FPS lows of its rival.

God Of War

• Finally, Santa Monica’s favorite child also ran much better on the RTX card with an average framerate of 92 FPS, whereas the 6900 XT had an average framerate of 64 FPS, showing a difference of around 44%.
• The minimums were around 72 FPS on the RTX card, while the AMD GPU showed minimum framerates of around 45 FPS. The stutters were much more perceivable on the older card.

Overall Gaming Performance

In our tests, we saw a large difference in performance between these two cards. The RTX 4070 Ti Super was around 40% faster than its rival on average, making the case very strongly that it has improved greatly on the performance of generations past. The 6900 XT showed slowed performance, making it inept for 4k gaming.

Editor`s Note

While deciding between these two cards, it is also important to keep miscellaneous attributes like ports in mind. The RX 6900 XT has one HDMI 2.1 port, two 1.4a Display Ports, and a USB Type-C. The RTX 4070 Ti Super swaps the USB Type-C for another Display Port 1.4a.

Temperatures

The 4070 Ti Super also took the cake in terms of thermal management. Our tests showed it to be around 10% cooler than its rival on average. Bear in mind that thermal performance is extremely dependent on a few factors, all of which we could not account for, so take these numbers with a grain of salt.

Price And Value

Despite all the performance benefits of the 4070 Ti Super, it still suffers from high pricing, something that the 6900 XT is not as bad at. It is important to mention that the price of the RX 6900 XT was extruded from eBay.com, and you might find this card more expensive if you buy it new.

What We Recommend

RTX 4070 Ti Super: Despite the Nvidia hierarchy having a few cards above it, the RTX 4070 Ti Super is a card that packs astounding performance. Sure, it has a high price tag, but with performance much higher than even the RTX 3090 from last gen, a large population of people will find this card worth it.

RX 6900 XT: The RX 6900 XT had a less impressive performance, but it was better than most cards you can get for its price in this day and age. This card serves a demographic that is very different from that of the RTX 4070 Ti Super, allowing gaming at high resolutions to budget gamers.

To conclude, the RTX 4070 Ti Super does win in terms of performance, though the comparison of it with the RX 6900 XT was never head-to-head. If we talk about value, both cards excel at what their market segment demands.
