Modded PS5s Can Now Play PS2 Discs Despite Lack of Backwards Compatibility

Unofficial PS5 Backward Compatibility Is Here!

Story Highlight
  • Modders have made PS5 consoles play original PS2 discs through an emulator.
  • The emulator also supports discs via external disc drives, making it possible to play said PS2 games on a modded PS5 Digital Edition console.
  • This is just one of the many impressive milestones in the PS5 modding and emulation scene recently.

PS5 modding has been through a number of breakthroughs lately, especially ever since Sony announced the end of physical discs from 2028.

Some modders have even managed to run all of the PC on a PS5, and emulation efforts for the console have picked up the pace. As the interesting developments continue, the PS5 has now become capable of running PS2 games.

Why it matters: Native PS2 backwards compatibility has been a long-demanded feature for the PS5, but PlayStation has yet to officially support it.

The PS2 to PS5 emulator PS5SX2 highlights how PS2 discs can now be run natively on the PS5.

Do note that this method requires dumping the game first, after which it can be natively played like a traditional disc-based title. Also, the PS5SX2 emulator supports external disc drives via USB, making it possible to run PS2 discs on a PS5 Digital Edition as well.

Of course, this is incredibly impressive, especially since the emulator relies on PCSX2’s CPU recompiler and a modified Vulkan driver for the GPU.

The PS5 Still Does Not Play PS2 Games Natively

As mentioned earlier, PS5 emulation on PC has also made plenty of strides recently, highlighting just how rapidly Sony’s latest hardware is being made compatible across a wide range of platforms.
