- Sony announced it’s cancelling PlayStation physical discs starting from 2028.
- This has led to increased interest in PS5 jailbreak and piracy and similar trends.
- Fans are frustrated with the company, doing it as a protest against Sony.
Sony dropped a bombshell a couple of days ago when it announced that it’s getting rid of physical media and going all-digital for the future. Fans have been furious at this, but Sony seems adamant, as it’s been totally silent on the uproar.
Amid all this, fans have taken an increased interest in piracy and jailbroken PS5s as a protest against the company’s decision. Now, we don’t support piracy, but the fans are frustrated, and that is for a good reason.
Why it matters: Digital games mean you get a license to play a game that can be cancelled anytime the provider decides, so it completely takes away the sense of ownership and game preservation for the long run.

On Google Trends, searches for “PS5 Jailbreak” have risen considerably. They have been 30% higher than last week, which is interestingly 50% down from yesterday, when people poured into the platform to pirate their console.
Additionally, YouTube videos that promote these things and demonstrate how to do it have seen a new influx of views and comments, with people calling out Sony for disk cancellation and now resorting to these ways to protest.

Fans have been so desperate that they’ve even launched a petition for Sony to reverse its decision, which is nearing 100K signatures. However, this could be too late for all this, as they’ve already shut down factories producing discs.
