Sony has been under fire recently for cancelling physical games. The Japanese giant announced that from 2028, all future games will be digital-only, which in a way marks the end of game preservation and resale among customers.
Fans recently filed a petition for Sony not to kill off PlayStation physical discs, which has gained huge traction and now reached over 90K signatures. The number is increasing abruptly and is expected to cross 100K soon.
Why it matters: Despite how digital games are now dominating sales, physical games will always have a place for fans. Digital games are just a license to a game that can be revoked, but physical gives you complete ownership.
On Change.org, the petition for Sony to keep making physical PlayStation games has surpassed 90,000 signatures. Fans have been engaging with the petition in huge numbers, trying to reverse Sony’s decision.
However, it seems like it’s already too late for that, as Sony has reportedly closed the factory that produced discs and is repurposing it for something else. So, the decision is pretty much final, and there’s no going back.
Fans have been furious at this and have been cancelling PS Plus memberships in masses as a protest, but that might not matter. However, games launching before 2027 will have discs, and continue to do so after 2028.
