- Over 85% of gamers oppose Sony’s move to cancel disc editions of its games.
- This tidbit comes from a survey conducted by Digital Foundry with over 64K participants.
- An overwhelming majority of gamers want Sony to walk back its decision.
Sony was once praised for its contributions to physical media, thanks to helping pioneer the Blu-ray format. It once even mocked digital game sharing, but things could not be any more different now.
The company announced it is ditching disc production for first-party titles starting in 2028, confirming that PS6 games won’t be on physical media. This reveal came with a lot of backlash from furious gamers and developers, with reports suggesting studios were completely blindsided.
A new survey now shows that over 85% of gamers vehemently oppose Sony’s decision to cancel disc editions of first-party titles.
Why it matters: Even if digital media is more preferred, many gamers still choose physical editions to tangibly own them. Disc editions are also one of the best methods for preserving games, so the entire industry is criticizing the company for its decision.
Digital Foundry’s survey on YouTube gathered over 64K votes at the time of writing, showing that many gamers participated globally. The overwhelming majority of voters have requested Sony to reconsider its controversial decision.
Many users claim that discs are still important since they are the tangible proof of game ownership.
According to several EULAs by gaming companies, titles bought digitally are just rented licenses that can be taken away anytime.
Some games can be taken down indefinitely, while players might lose access to others for one reason or another. For example, Sony recently confirmed it will shut down the PlayStation Store on PS3 in the near future.
Therefore, physical media is also important for game preservation.

A lot of gamers are even threatening not to buy a PS6 if Sony doesn’t reverse its decision, while others are cancelling their PlayStation Plus subscriptions to protest. Unfortunately, the gaming brand has been completely silent on social media since the announcement.
