Epic Games Transitioning Fully To AI-Generated Code And Art For The Future

Epic Asked Devs To Stop Using Handwritten Code!

Story Highlight
  • Epic Games will now rely entirely on AI-generated code and art moving forward.
  • Staff have reportedly been told that future work should follow an AI-first approach across development.
  • CEO Tim Sweeney has also come forward with a response that seems to confirm this AI-focused approach.

Epic Games has been at the forefront of the games industry due to its work on Unreal Engine and Fortnite.

However, the studio has found itself surrounded by negativity, largely due to its recent layoffs and unpopular PC storefront and exclusivity deals. A new report also adds to this negativity, revealing a huge shift toward generative AI within the studio.

Why it matters: Generative AI is becoming more and more popular across game development, but Epic Games approach seems to be pushing the needle a bit further than most.

Epic Games is reportedly making a major internal shift toward AI-generated game development, and the Disney shooter appears to be one of the first big projects affected by the change. According to Bloomberg, this particular project will have no more handwritten code as Epic pushes an AI-first model.

It is also said that Epic Games wants all the game’s art to be generated with AI workflows. This likely means that the studio plans to transition to an AI-first model across the board, relegating coding and art-related tasks to AI.

Interestingly, CEO Tim Sweeney has come forward with a response to this report. He argued that Epic Games is aiming to do more with people as opposed to doing the same with fewer people.

Of course, this response hasn’t been received the best due to Epic Games’ history with layoffs and redundancies.
