Cyberpunk 2077 Sells Over 40 Million Copies, 10 Million More Than Witcher 3 In The Same Period

Despite A Poor Headstart, Cyberpunk 2077 Surpassed Witcher 3 Over The Years!

Story Highlight
  • Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 40 million units globally, CD Projekt Red confirms.
  • The game has sold 10 million more copies than The Witcher 3 in the same time period of six years.
  • It will likely sell millions of copies more after the Edgerunners season 2 anime drops soon.

CDPR’s Cyberpunk 2077 has had quite an eventful run in the last six years. The game has sold incredibly well after the initial push died down, with multiple projects, DLCs, and updates bringing hundreds of thousands of additional sales each time.

A new announcement by CD Projekt Red confirms Cyberpunk 2077 sold 40 million copies six years after launch. To put things into perspective, the game had sold an impressive 35 million by November of last year and over 15 million just in the last two years.

An extra 5 million sales in the last few months after six years, and that without any major updates, is a massive achievement for the studio.

Why it matters: Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the best redemption arcs in gaming’s history, up there with No Man’s Sky. CDPR’s magnum opus began selling like hotcakes soon after the bugs were ironed out and updates brought more content and life to the world of Night City.

CDPR confirmed the sales figure on Twitter, with many gamers congratulating the team for the incredible milestone.

The game remains quite popular with a healthy number of daily active players still strolling through the lavish world of Night City. It has been CDPR’s main source of revenue for the last few years.

For those not in the know, The Witcher 3 had sold 30 million copies in its first six years, so the sci-fi open-world experience is at least 10 million copies ahead at this point.

Cyberpunk 2077 has arguably become more popular than The Witcher 3 over the last few years. Regardless, the latter is still ahead with its 50 million sales milestone.

The Witcher 3 is also getting a new DLC next year.

Cyberpunk 2077’s future also looks bright. CD Projekt Red mentions that Cyberpunk 2077’s great foundation is fueling its upcoming projects in the same universe, which includes a sequel that is years away and multiple additional rumored DLCs.

Do you think Cyberpunk 2077 will sell millions more copies after the anime Edgerunners season 2 comes out? Are you looking forward to other Cyberpunk-related projects? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
