Tim Sweeney Thinks Bungie Could Have Used AI To Generate Heaps Of Content For The Game.

Story Highlight
  • Tim Sweeney thinks AI could have allowed Destiny 2 to thrive.
  • The Bungie title was struggling with low revenue due to an ever-increasing development budget.
  • The Epic CEO suggested that Bungie could have used the technology to generate new content more cheaply.

Bungie has been the gaming world’s center of attention for all the wrong reasons. The developer recently laid off almost half of its workforce, firing 400 staff members after pulling the plug on Destiny 2 once and for all.

Fans have already started petitions to force Sony into developing a sequel to the game. But, with reports suggesting such a project would carry a hefty $500 million budget, that seems unlikely. Now, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has come up with an unusual solution that could have saved the franchise.

Why it mattersGiven that developers who worked at Bungie have already stated that the problem was leadership, the AI solution feels premature.

In a post on X, Tim Sweeney suggested that Bungie could have utilised AI to save the Destiny franchise. The Epic boss stated that Destiny 2 could have made more revenue if the studio had incorporated AI to generate enormous amounts of game content on a much lower budget.

The Bungie title was barely profitable throughout its lifespan due to the investment required to develop new content. However, Sweeney thinks Destiny 2 would have thrived if AI had been used to overcome this problem rather than spending the big bucks on developers.

Considering how Epic Games fired 1,000 employees this year while praising the technology for making jobs more efficient, this suggestion isn’t too surprising. However, the technology is already prevalent at Bungie’s parent company, Sony, which calls it an exciting long-term project.

Destiny 2
Destiny 2 didn’t make enough profit during its lifetime due to high development costs.

With Marathon also struggling to put up the numbers PlayStation wants, it will be interesting to see if Sony starts utilising AI to a much larger degree for its live-service projects, like Sweeney is suggesting. With every first-party studio under the company already using the technology, Sweeney’s suggestion might turn some heads.

Do you think Bungie should utilise AI to develop Destiny 3 on a lower budget? Would you play the sequel if it were made that way? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
