Destiny 3 Would Cost Around $500 Million To Make At Least, Suggests Insider

PlayStation And Bungie Are Just Not Ready For Such Massive Costs!

Story Highlight
  • An insider estimates a budget of over $500 million for Destiny 3 due to global inflation and rising development costs.
  • This would make the game more expensive than the entire IP’s cost planned by Activision when Destiny first began development.
  • It is said that PlayStation does not want to spend this kind of money for now, following various live-service disappointments.

Bungie recently announced the end of support for Destiny 2, marking the end of an era. The gaming giant is also expected to go through big layoffs following this announcement, and it is said that Destiny 3 is not in development for now.

A popular insider has shared more details regarding Bungie’s situation on the matter. He now states that Destiny 3 is not being worked on as it would cost $500 million or more.

Why it matters: Bungie has spent nearly a full decade supporting Destiny 2, so the end of support has disappointed the game’s dedicated followers.

Jason Schreier, the popular insider who broke the news that Destiny 3 is not in development, has shared that the reason Bungie has not yet started working on the third title is mainly related to costs.

As Jason Schreier points out, Activision allocated a huge $500 million budget for Destiny back in 2014, and this budget was expected to cover the costs of multiple games and expansions as part of a decade-long plan for the series.

The insider states that Destiny 3 would likely cost more than this due to the current global economy and modern game development budgets. He also points out that Bungie’s offices, based in Seattle, lead to game development being very expensive overall.

Jason Schreier states that PlayStation likely does not want to spend this much money on a live-service project, especially due to major cancellations, such as The Last of Us Online and failures like Concord.

It is also worth noting that this estimated budget does not cover the costs that would be required to market the game. All in all, Destiny 3 would be a humongous undertaking for all teams involved, and it appears Bungie and PlayStation aren’t ready for the game just yet.
