- An insider notes that Valve was internally considering a very high price for the Steam Machine following the memory price hikes.
- He reiterates that the internal price targets were even higher than the new Steam Deck OLED MSRP.
- Valve has yet to officially settle on a launch price, but an announcement is expected soon.
Valve has officially joined the fray and increased console pricing. The Steam Deck OLED 1TB now costs close to $1,000, and this news does not bode well for the upcoming price reveal of the Steam Machine.
In fact, an insider has hinted at quite the stressful launch price for the console.
Why it matters: The Steam Machine is aiming to compete with consoles while offering the benefits of a PC. Valve’s MSRP could make or break the console’s launch experience.

Valve insider Brad Lynch says that he was informed of the Steam Machine’s internal pricing over two months ago.
According to the insider, this pricing was still higher than what Valve has officially announced for the Steam Deck today. This effectively means the console could cost over $1,000 at launch.
The insider also suggests that pricing could have risen further since this report. All of this, of course, is happening in the wake of rising DRAM prices, which have impacted hardware costs across the industry.

At this point, most have likely prepared themselves for the Steam Machine costing over $1000. However, it will be interesting to see just how much more the console costs than this benchmark.
For now, Valve is staying silent on the matter, but the gaming giant hopes to reveal more information soon. It’s also worth taking this information with a slight grain of salt until this announcement.
