Setting A Horrible Precedent For Steam Machine Pricing!

Story Highlight
  • Valve has raised Steam Deck prices after battling the ongoing memory crisis.
  • The handheld has seen a price increase of over 40%, and the 1TB OLED model now costs close to $1000.
  • This could be a sign of things to come for the Steam Machine, which may cost even more.

By now, practically everyone has either increased hardware prices or is considering doing so. Following in PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo’s footsteps, another console manufacturer has announced price hikes.

As it continues to battle ongoing memory shortages, Valve is the latest to raise console pricing, confirming a huge price bump for the Steam Deck.

Why it matters: Valve’s Steam Deck was best known for its value proposition and budget-friendliness compared to other handhelds. The latest price hike sees the console losing its edge in this department.

Steam Deck OLED
Steam Deck OLED Revised Pricing via Valve

Valve has announced a new pricing structure for its consoles, impacting both the 512GB Steam Deck OLED and the 1TB Steam Deck OLED. The former has seen a $240 price bump, while the latter now costs $300 more than its previous price. As such, the new prices are as follows:

  • Steam Deck OLED 512GB $949
  • Steam Deck OLED 1TB $789

Keep in mind that Valve previously discontinued the $550 base Steam Deck model, so the handheld now starts at $789.

For those curious, this means that the 1TB model has seen a 46% price hike, while the 512GB model now costs around 43% more than before. This is undoubtedly the most significant price hike for any console in recent memory.

The small bit of good news, if any at all, is that the handheld is now in stock via Valve, but with the new prices, it may be best to consider alternatives like the ROG Ally.

Steam Machine

This also means that Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine, which many fear will cost an absurd amount following the memory shortages, will likely see Valve taking a similar approach.

Initial estimates suggested Valve would launch the Steam Machine at a $700 MSRP, but judging by the recent Steam Deck pricing revision, it would not be surprising to see the new hardware now cost well over $1000.
