- Valve might soon announce the launch timing and cost for its upcoming Steam Machine.
- The company is reportedly reconsidering its pricing strategy and may take a loss on each unit to stay competitive.
- Increased production costs for memory and storage have made it difficult for Valve to keep the device’s price low.
Latest rumours have surfaced in the market, speculating that Valve will reveal the remaining details about its new Steam Machine, including pricing and release date. To be honest, we aren’t too concerned with the date. What matters is how far Valve is ready to reduce profit margins to make the Steam Machine competitive.
According to the source, the firm has been internally debating whether to accept short-term losses on the device, which is particularly significant given Valve’s prior statement that its strategy will not be that of a subsidized traditional console. However, that was before the market crashed due to the high cost of memory.
About the specifications of the Steam Machine, it will run semi-custom AMD hardware. It includes a 6-core, 12-thread CPU clocked at 4.80 GHz and built on the AMD Zen 4 architecture, with a TDP of 30W. For dedicated graphics, it uses a GPU with 1,792 Stream Processors based on the RDNA 3 architecture, with a sustained frequency of up to 2.45 GHz and a TDP of 110W. This hardware comes with 16 GB of DDR5 RAM and 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM for the console.
In terms of performance, we’re looking at gear that’s quite similar to an AMD Ryzen 5 7640U laptop CPU paired with an AMD Radeon RX 7600S laptop graphics card, which is comparable to a laptop GeForce RTX 3060. In truth, the performance could be better than an RTX 3060 because the games are optimized for this technology.
A review uploaded early by the Techy Talk channel and then deleted supposedly disclosed the controller’s price of $99.99. While Valve has not officially confirmed this figure, it seems clear that it is the correct price. If they had the controller for evaluation, they would surely know the price and release date.
The Steam Controller was also featured on Komodo Station, an authorized Valve reseller in Asia. SteamDB also uncovered that Valve had already covertly uploaded an unboxing video for the controller to Steam. All of this indicates that the controller’s release is almost here.
Due to NAND flash memory price increase Valve’s Steam Machine can no longer be considered as a low-cost “console” like the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S. It will cost more than expected. Valve previously indicated that its price would be equivalent to that of a PC with similar specifications, as well as competitive with a custom-built machine, but not necessarily with a subsidized console.
If the Steam Machine’s price approaches that of a compact gaming PC, it may lose appeal to those who prefer to build their own rig or purchase a more powerful machine. After all, SteamOS can be installed on any PC.
But if Valve attempts to position itself in the console market, it will be forced to forgo profit margins or accept losses, which is becoming increasingly difficult owing to rising RAM and storage costs. As a result, Valve must be “ready” to announce a release date and price, thereby ending months of uncertainty.
