Valve Could Actually Sell The Steam Machine At A Loss Like Traditional Consoles

Expert Verified By

But The Release is "Very Close"!

Story Highlight
  • A report indicates that Valve is going back and forth deciding the Steam Machine’s price.
  • The company is considering selling it at a loss, just like what traditional consoles do.
  • This could assist them in tackling the memory prices and help them with increased sales.

The Steam Machine is supposedly set to release this year as Valve nears the end of its production. The device could be revolutionary as it directly competes with traditional home consoles, and due to Steam, it will provide a massive library.

Another thing, the gaming giants could do similar to traditional consoles is that they might sell the Steam Machine at a loss, according to a reliable insider. Typically, consoles are sold at a loss, and profits are generated through game sales.

Why it matters: If Valve can keep the price of its hardware down, especially in the current market infested with the memory crisis, it could offset PlayStation and Xbox sales and become a new heavy-hitter in the space.

Valve could sell the Steam Machine at a loss

Insider Gaming, in a recent report, revealed that Valve has been going back and forth about the Steam Machine’s pricing and is considering selling it at a loss, just like what Sony and Microsoft do with PlayStation and Xbox.

However, it isn’t confirmed if the final decision has been made or not, but the official reveal is now getting closer. Still, as the Steam Controller officially launches, Valve has confirmed it is indeed facing RAM shortage issues

This is a general trend for the industry, as Asha Sharma also showed concern about the memory issue for the next-gen Xbox Helix. Anyhow, if the Steam Machine is sold at a loss and at a good price, it might heavily impact the market
