The Title Will Mark The Shooting Franchises Return To Nintendo Consoles After 13 Years.

Story Highlight
  • Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 will reportedly be the first title in the series to launch on Switch 2.
  • This will be the first game from the FPS IP to land on a Nintendo console in over a decade.
  • Sledgehammer Games also has other Switch 2 ports for the franchise in development.

Call of Duty has needed a fresh start for quite some time now, and the sales performance of Black Ops 7 proved this once again. The franchise declined in revenue across all platforms in 2025, falling 60% in playtime and overall gross on PC.

Activision has decided to make changes to Call of Duty, reshaping the series with a fresh slate in 2027 and skipping last-gen consoles with this year’s entry. As it turns out, the upcoming game in the franchise will also mark a new milestone, debuting on Nintendo Switch 2.

Why it matters: Call of Duty needs a new audience to help it grow further, and a return to Nintendo consoles might be the best way to achieve this.

According to insider NateTheHate, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be the first game in the series to launch on Nintendo Switch 2. A Switch edition of the FPS franchise has been rumored ever since Microsoft signed the 10-year agreement with Nintendo back in 2023.

Many reports suggested that Black Ops 7 would be the first Call of Duty game to land on a Nintendo console in over a decade. However, it seems like Modern Warfare 4 will mark the iconic IP’s return to the platform by debuting on Switch 2.

Job listings last year also revealed that Sledgehammer Games is working on Nintendo Switch 2 ports for several Call of Duty titles. Hence, recent entries in the franchise might be set for a Switch 2 debut after Modern Warfare 4.

Black Ops 7 was originally going to be the franchise’s debut on Switch 2.

There are concerns regarding whether Xbox and Activision will be able to port Call of Duty to Switch 2, with the CMA bringing up the inability of its predecessor to run the series. But, considering how open-world behemoths like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Elden Ring have held their own on the console, Call of Duty will be just fine.

Do you think the FPS series will be a success on the Nintendo console? Is Modern Warfare 4 the right title to debut the franchise on Switch 2? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
