Destiny 3 Is Also Not In Active Development!

Story Highlight
  • Bungie announced the end of Destiny 2 support today, and it appears the team is gearing up for major layoffs.
  • A new report states that Destiny 3 is also not in active development, and various pitches from the team have been rejected.
  • The studio currently plans on redeeming Marathon through long-term support.

Bungie has recently confirmed the end of support for Destiny 2 after 9 long years. The studio is now all in on Marathon, its latest extraction shooter, which also appears to have found itself in a tough spot at the moment.

Following this announcement, a new report has revealed that Bungie is planning a new round of major layoffs.

Why it matters: PlayStation’s acquisition of Bungie continues to prove troublesome for the gaming giant despite the team’s knack for live-service first-person shooters.

Destiny 2 Won’t Receive Any More New Content Soon

According to Bloomberg’s latest report via Twitter, Bungie is set to go through a round of significant layoffs soon.

The report also reveals that Destiny 3 is not currently in the works at the studio, but the team has pitched new projects related to the series. Unfortunately, it appears none of these pitches has been given the green light so far.

For now, Bungie is said to be planning long-term support for Marathon. The studio is hoping to expand the extraction shooter’s player base over time in an effort to create a long-lasting live-service title.

Marathon Has The Team’s Undivided Attention Now

Following this report, many have shown concern for Bungie, contemplating whether the team could eventually be shut down in the worst-case scenario.

As mentioned earlier, Marathon’s current player counts are anything but encouraging, so the team needs to move quickly to attract new players and retain those already playing the game.
