Marvel’s Wolverine Sells 2 Million Units, Only 22% Of Sales Were Physical, Claims Analyst

Despite The Strong Start, The Game Won't Do Spider-Man Numbers.

Story Highlight
  • Marvel’s Wolverine has sold 2 million copies in its first three days, according to a new analysis.
  • Only 22% of the sales were physical copies, with the game selling 1 million units through digital pre-orders.
  • The title might not reach Spider-Man sales figures due to the mixed reception on social media.

Ever since its release, Marvel’s Wolverine has been facing an onslaught of criticism. Despite largely positive critical scores, the Insomniac title has underwhelmed most gamers, with criticism focusing on its excessive accessibility options and unusual character design.

Insomniac has addressed the reception of the game and promised to fix some of the major issues players have with the title. However, it seems like the response on social media hasn’t had a big effect on Marvel’s Wolverine’s sales.

Why it matters: Despite a strong start, the sales figures of Marvel’s Wolverine are as underwhelming as the final product itself.

According to data from Alinea Analytics, Marvel’s Wolverine has sold 1.9 million copies since launch, with 1 million of these unit sales coming from pre-orders. The Insomniac title has generated a whopping $130 million in revenue, passing the lifetime sales and revenue of Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding 2 in just three days.

Furthermore, Marvel’s Wolverine has already become the top-performing first-party PlayStation game on PS5 this year, overtaking the likes of Marathon and Saros. Interestingly, only 22.9% of the overall sales were physical copies, a number that will give Sony more confidence in its digital-only approach from 2028 onwards.

Despite the strong start, however, the mixed response on social media may limit the commercial performance of Marvel’s Wolverine going forward, according to the analysts. No doubt, the game will sell a lot more thanks to the upcoming X-Men movie and new PS5 owners looking for a AAA showcase, but the numbers won’t be as high as Spider-Man.

Marvel's Wolverine User Score Metacritic
The game’s user score has nosedived after launch, falling to 6.4 on Metacritic.

Marvel’s Wolverine has failed to match Insomniac’s spotless critical record, with the game’s user score falling as low as 6.4 on Metacritic after recent reviews. Considering how the title needs to sell at least 6 million copies in its first year to be considered a success, it will be interesting to see its commercial tail.

Do you think Marvel’s Wolverine is going to be a success for Insomniac and PlayStation? Would sales be better if the title were semi-open-world instead of linear? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
