- NetherRealm seems to be holding a playtest for an unreleased AAA 2D fighting game soon.
- All signs point to this game being Injustice 3, which has been rumored for a while now.
- If the game is already being playtested, an announcement may not be too far off.
NetherRealm Studios has been out of the picture since it released Mortal Kombat 1 in 2023. In fact, support for the game was cut sooner than expected.
Recent job listings and rumors have now pointed to the team working on Injustice 3. In fact, the game may be on track to hold a closed playtest later this week.
Why it matters: The first two Injustice games were quite popular among fans of fighting games and DC Comics. NetherRealm Studios’ third entry could be the biggest in the series yet.
A posting over on Good Gamer Group notes that a playtest for an unreleased AAA 2D fighting game is set to be held between September 14 and 15.
Of course, Injustice 3 isn’t explicitly mentioned, but the fact that the test is being conducted in the US and relates to AAA 2D fighting gameplay suggests NetherRealm Studios is involved.
Moreover, most of the upcoming fighting games that are currently rumored or announced, such as Dead or Alive 7 and Virtua Fighter Crossroads, fail to meet this criterion. As such, Injustice 3 seems to be a safe bet.
Given that NetherRealm Studios has previously announced games at events like The Game Awards, Injustice 3 could also show at The Game Awards 2026.
Of course, there’s no guarantee this will happen, but with all the signs that have shown up recently, another Injustice entry certainly seems inevitable.
