Despite the initial success of Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm Studios’ reputation in the fighting game community has seen better days. With support for the latest Mortal Kombat entry being cut much sooner than anticipated, many are now hoping for a strong return to form for the developer.

Fans were previously elated when rumors regarding Injustice 3 made the rounds. A new update on the situation once again points to a third Injustice title from the developer.

Why it matters: NetherRealm Studios’ work on Injustice was quite well-received, and it even inspired various films and future adaptations.

Injustice 3 Could Reignite Superman And Batman’s Rivalry

A new report from MP1st via Twitter confirms that Injustice 3 is indeed in the works at the moment.

This confirmation comes from a Warner Bros. Games employee’s LinkedIn profile. The profile has been kept anonymous in the original report for privacy’s sake, but it does confirm various titles that are currently under development.

Injustice 3 is explicitly mentioned in the LinkedIn profile, confirming its existence within NetherRealm Studios. Of course, this still leaves the question of when the developer will make an official announcement.

NetherRealm Studios typically operates on 3-4 year development cycles. Therefore, the game could show up at some point in 2027 or 2028. It should be noted that Injustice 2 made its debut in 2017, so it will have been a full decade by the time its sequel arrives.

Many Fans Have Wanted To See Injustice 2 For A While

Fans can expect to see new characters inspired by James Gunn’s DC universe appear in the upcoming Injustice title. Previously, the likes of Deadshot made their debut in the series following popular adaptations in films and other media.

Because Injustice is a legacy fighter compared to Mortal Kombat, it will be interesting to see how NetherRealm Studios approaches the series’ evolution with a third entry. Also, it’s worth noting that Warner Bros. Games is likely to explore even more big releases like Injustice for the future as part of its larger goals for the games business.
