- Former TLOU and Uncharted director isn’t impressed by the modern AAA games.
- He thinks the games lack innovation, which has led them to become boring.
- Taking God of War Laufey as an example, he said he isn’t excited for the title.
This year has been brilliant for gaming despite all the controversies and the AI-led memory shortage. We’ve had releases like Resident Evil Requiem, Crimson Desert, 007 First Light, Blood of Dawnwalker, and GTA 6, and more are yet to come.
However, a former Naughty Dog lead developer isn’t too thrilled with the current state of AAA gaming and thinks that it has become boring. He referenced God of War Laufey, stating that, looking at the game, he isn’t excited at all.
Why it matters: Yes, there have been complaints about modern AAA games losing creativity as studios play it too safe now. However, this year’s releases have been amazing and shown how great AAA games can still be.

TLOU and Uncharted 4 director, Bruce Straley, talked to Edge Magazine recently on modern AAA gaming. He stated that across the board, there doesn’t seem to be any opportunity to inject fresh and innovative ideas.
I think the verbs and experiences we’re delivering in the triple-A space are, I wanna say boring. When I actually look at what you’re doing in the game (GoW Laufey) , I’m not excited.

This makes the games boring. Putting God of War Laufey as an example, he said that the work put into the game is amazing, and it’s outstandingly detailed, but it’s still the same formula, and it doesn’t excite him.
Straley says he has an idea for a AAA game, but that might never become a reality. He did praise smaller indie titles, which are way more creative, and developers take risks, which leads them to be a lot more fun overall.
