PS6 RAM & SSD Costs Reportedly Shoot Past $680, Higher Than Base PS5

Forget About Getting PS6 Below $1000 At This Point!

Story Highlight
  • The PS6 RAM & SSD costs are expected to exceed $680, according to a hardware leaker.
  • The console’s overall bill of materials already hovers around $1000.
  • Sony previously said it has no plans to sell the PS6 at a loss, so we could be looking at a $1000+ console.

Memory prices have touched the sky since late 2025, spelling trouble for the next-gen Xbox and Sony consoles. Both the PS6 and Xbox Helix are expected to launch at $1000, even after internal delays, as component scarcity grows in the gaming industry.

A new report claims PS6’s storage and memory costs have exceeded $680, not counting the console’s CPU, GPU, and other components. In other words, the PS6’s RAM & SSD costs are now higher than the current base 1TB PS5, which goes for $649.

Why it matters: Sony’s next-gen console will be difficult to afford for many gamers worldwide, especially as the bill of materials has already risen nearly $1000. With Xbox Helix having nearly the same price, the next console generation might see a pretty poor reception.

Hardware leaker Kepler says PS6's RAM & SSD costs alone have surpassed the $680 mark.

On NeoGAF, trusted hardware leaker Kepler clarifies that PS6 RAM and NAND costs alone are $680. He previously mentioned that the console’s overall bill of materials was already nearly reaching the $1000 mark.

Considering that Sony has no plans to sell the PS6 at a loss, we could be looking at a price higher than $1000 just so the company can avoid being in the red. The exorbitant price tag is expected even as the PS6 is rumored to skip a disc drive to save costs.

Therefore, it will be incredibly difficult for most gamers to upgrade to the next-gen consoles. Analysts expect a grim 40% drop in sales compared to the current generation because of the devastating jump in prices.

PS6 is shaping up to be an extremely expensive console.

The same leaker has also previously claimed that it’s not possible for Sony to sell the PS6 handheld below $600, thanks to rising LPDDR memory prices.

Additionally, Xbox Helix will supposedly be 40% faster than PS6 on paper because of its higher 56 TFLOPS of GPU power, compared to PS6’s 40 TFLOPS.

Do you think the PS6 will cost over $1000 at the minimum, given the rumored bill of materials? Are you looking forward to owning the next-gen Sony console? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
