- Both Project Helix and PS6 are expected to cost over $1000.
- Xbox projects that memory costs will double by the fall of 2027.
- The memory market is not expected to start recovering until the end of 2028.
Despite showing signs of stability, the memory market has continued to worsen over the last few months. Rising prices are directly impacting everyday consumer products, with consoles and gaming PCs among the most severely affected.
Xbox announced yet another significant price bump last night for its series lineup, raising prices by $100 to $150 depending on the model. However, the concerning part is that Xbox boldly implies these price hikes will continue into 2026 and beyond.
Therefore, the PS6 and Project Helix—rumored for the late 2027 to early 2028 period—are already expected to cost over $1000 at launch.
Why it matters: Sony and Xbox might be left with no choice but to severely increase the pricing of their next-gen offerings. However, the consoles could fail to boast a large enough player base to justify their existence and flop under a $1000+ price tag.

Xbox clarifies in a statement that memory prices have already increased by more than two times their original costs. And their current pricing will double by the fall of 2027.
Unfortunately, console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027.

Therefore, if the Xbox Series X 1TB digital edition and the PS5 Pro 2TB model already cost over $749 and $899, then there is little chance that Project Helix and the PS6 will cost anything less than $1000.
Valve’s Steam Machine, which is much weaker than the PS5 and Xbox Series X in many gaming benchmarks, also launched with an MSRP of over $1000 without a controller included.
This incentive further gives Xbox and Sony the leeway to make their next-gen consoles cost over $1000.

One way both consoles can avoid such steep pricing is by delaying the next-gen consoles, an idea that Sony is already reportedly considering. They could also sell PS6 and Project Helix at a steep loss by subsidizing them via PS Plus and Game Pass subscriptions.
