- Valve marketed the Steam Machine as a device capable of 4K 60 FPS gaming with FSR.
- They have retracted the statement, which now reads “up to 4K” gaming on the site.
- This is more in line with how it performs, as the earlier claim was exaggerated.
Valve recently revealed the Steam Machine’s price, and it starts from a whopping $1,050 for the base variant. While pricing is one debate, performance is the other. The company promised 4K 60 FPS gaming, but has retracted its claim.
On one of the official Steam Machine webpages, when it was announced, Valve mentioned that the Steam Machine would be capable of 4K 60 FPS gaming. However, it has now changed the statement to “up to 4K gaming”.
Why it matters: Based on the hardware, the claim already looked a bit far-fetched, and testing has proven that. Valve made a mistake marketing it as 4K 60 FPS, when in reality, the results aren’t even close.

Valve made some bold claims when the Steam Machine was officially announced, including 4K 60 FPS gaming with FSR, and that their hardware would be better than 70% of the PCs people have at home right now.
We don’t know about the second one, but the first certainly isn’t true, at least for the most part. It’s true, you can game at 4K 60 FPS, but that is possible only with low-demanding or indie games, and not with modern AAA titles.

Even if it plays at 4K, it is scaled up from quite a low resolution, and you can find the lack of detail. Technically, up to 4K gaming is the more legit statement, and they should have stuck with it in the first place.
What makes the value proposition uglier is that it gets outperformed by a $400 PS5. If the RAM crisis hadn’t been there, the $750 price might’ve been a better impression; however, Valve can’t be blamed in this regard.
