"Who Approved This? This Looks So Bad"

Story Highlight
  • God of War creator David Jaffe has criticized Marvel’s Wolverine character designs.
  • He argues that the game’s designs are too far removed from Marvel’s typical style, stating that most of them look outright bad.
  • Fans have also had similar criticisms for the game’s characters in the past.

Marvel’s Wolverine marks the PS5’s biggest first-party release this year, and it launches very soon. In fact, following the latest round of previews, the game’s reviews also go live in two days.

However, before these reviews, the God of War creator has shared a few thoughts on Marvel’s Wolverine, particularly related to its character designs. In one of his recent videos, the developer offered plenty of harsh criticism for the game.

Why it matters: Marvel’s Wolverine’s character designs recently came into question when fans learned the team had hired Concord’s character designer despite harsh criticism of the live-service title a few years ago.

David Jaffe’s latest video about Marvel’s Wolverine shows that the veteran game designer isn’t happy with the way characters appear in Marvel’s Wolverine, particularly when it comes to some of the female characters.

Jaffe says that he understands why developers go for grounded character designs in certain games, pointing to an example like Returnal. However, he argues that Insomniac Games’ female designs are too far removed from what Marvel’s heroes look like.

Pointing to characters like Mystique, Jean Gray, and Lady Deathstrike, he had harsh words to share for Insomniac Games.

What the f**k are you guys doing Insomniac? Who over there thinks this is a good idea? Who has allowed this to continue?

David Jaffe argues that Marvel’s Wolverine is based on fantasy and aspirational characters, so its designs should stand out. He also points out that games like Marvel’s Rivals don’t suffer from the same problem, pointing fingers at Insomniac Games as being responsible.
