Back in December 2023, Insomniac Games suffered a huge leak after hackers got access to its internal documents. The leak also included the X-Men IP agreements between Marvel and Sony, giving us an in-depth look into Marvel’s expectations for these games.
The leaks unearthed a clause stipulating that Marvel may terminate its contract with Sony for future X-Men releases if Marvel’s Wolverine fails to sell at least 6 million copies on both PS5 and PC in its first year.
Why it matters: A lot is riding on how well Marvel’s Wolverine performs for Insomniac, since it could make or break Sony’s partnership with Marvel for future X-Men projects.
Marvel’s Wolverine and any other X-Men title that comes out has to sell at least 6 million units in their first year to be considered a success for Sony and Insomniac Games.
Therefore, the commercial performance of these titles is essential to preserve the relationship between Sony and Marvel. If Sony decides to back out of this agreement, then the publisher would have to pay Marvel $9 million in addition to other outstanding financial obligations.
Marvel’s Wolverine not only needs to impress gamers, but it also needs to sell like hotcakes to ensure that we can get more X-Men games in the future. The leaked 2023 roadmap revealed that Insomniac had multiple X-Men titles in the pipeline.
Unfortunately, Wolverine is already steeped in controversy, with known industry figures and gamers bashing the character designs in the game. The game also got a lot of flak for being overly accessible, while its repetitive combat and mediocre story were also criticized.
Wolverine is also Insomniac’s lowest-rated original console release in a decade, with a 77 Metacritic score, and Sony’s lowest-scoring PS5 game so far. Therefore, it would be pretty tough for the first X-Men title to meet the sales milestone.
The leak also revealed that X-Men titles will remain Sony exclusives for a decade, but Wolverine could still appear in Marvel crossover titles in the future.
