- Blizzard has revealed a new entry in the sci-fi StarCraft IP after over 15 years.
- The game isn’t an RTS like previous releases; it’s going for a story-driven open-world FPS genre instead.
- It is expected to come out in 2030, 4 years from today, unless there are internal development delays.
This year’s BlizzCon was more exciting than one might have expected, with Blizzard announcing a new mainline Diablo game for 2029. The company has also revealed the highly rumored StarCraft entry over 15 years after the second mainline title launched in the franchise.
This StarCraft revival is also not your typical RTS experience like its predecessors. In fact, it falls into a completely separate genre instead. The new game will be a story-driven open-world FPS, as shown in a mesmerizing cinematic announcement trailer.
Why it matters: Xbox is finally focusing on reviving its dormant IPs with promising prospects, as StarCraft has boasted a loyal fanbase for over a decade. The new sci-fi entry is also changing genres, which could also introduce it to a whole new audience.
The dark teaser trailer for the project reveals a marine named Holt training for the Dominion, only to get massacred by a Zerling Rush after landing on a planet. So, we can expect StarCraft not to pull any punches when it comes to the grimness of this franchise.
The game is set in the Koprulu Sector, and its story takes place 70 years after StarCraft 2’s events.
THE SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF THE DOMINION ANSWERED THE CALL WHEN MANKIND NEEDED THEM MOST. THEIR COURAGE HELD THE LINE. THEIR SACRIFICE BOUGHT US ANOTHER DAY. NOW THE CALL COMES TO YOU.

Led by Dan Hay, the game is in early development, and more details and gameplay reveals will be shown over the coming years as it progresses.

The new open-world StarCraft shooter will be out sometime in 2030, so it’s still years away. This distant release timeline has caused some controversy among fans, as Blizzard is notorious for announcing games ahead of time before they’re anywhere near ready.
