The era of physical game media is suddenly coming to an end with the next console generation, with PlayStation ending disc production of its first-party titles starting in 2028. As per rumors, Xbox is expected to follow suit, with its next-gen Project Helix also being digital-only.
However, a new survey with 10k participants reveals that a majority of Xbox users don’t want the company to abandon disc drives in Project Helix.
Over 63% of gamers have voted for the next-generation console to feature official disc support, offered either via a built-in drive or an add-on unit.
Why it matters: The latest survey shows that many gamers still care about the disc drive and physical edition of games. Xbox should reconsider its approach to Project Helix and release a variant that includes a disc drive to satisfy all groups of players.
Xbox insider Jez Corden held the survey on Twitter. 25.4% of Xbox users said they don’t care whether Project Helix comes with a disc drive. These gamers barely used the disc drive on Series consoles and don’t see a need for it in the next console.
The remaining 11.3% claim they don’t want Project Helix to include disc support. This minority argues that a disc drive would increase the overall production cost of the next-gen console, driving up the already inflated prices to new extremes.
To put things into perspective, next-gen consoles are expected to cross $1000, with the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 already getting close to that threshold after multiple price hikes.
Regardless, a majority argue Xbox should not remove the disc drive and physical games for people who still care about them.
On a side note, over 85% of gamers also opposed Sony’s decision to cancel physical copies of its first-party titles.
