Sony’s Massive Blow to Physical Media Outshines GTA 6 Announcement With 128M Views

Fans' Uproar Over Physical Cancellation Is Far More Pronounced!

Story Highlight
  • Sony recently announced that it is cancelling PlayStation physical discs from 2028.
  • The post has since attracted much more attention than the GTA 6 pre-orders opening.
  • The PlayStation announcement has 128 million views compared to Rockstar’s 83 million.

The last couple of weeks were a rollercoaster for gamers. It started with the highs of GTA 6 preorders finally opening and ended on the low of PlayStation ending physical games, but one development attracted a lot more attention.

Sony’s massive blow to PlayStation physical media completely outshone the GTA 6 pre-order announcement with over 128 million views on Twitter/X. The bad news surprisingly attracted far more attention than GTA 6.

Why it matters: Interestingly, GTA 6 is also doing the same thing PlayStation is doing, completely skipping physical discs; however, that hasn’t garnered as much criticism as Sony for skipping physical media.

On X, the announcement of PlayStation physical disc production ending in 2028 currently has 128 million views, while GTA 6 pre-orders were left behind with 83 million viewers, which in itself is a massive number.

This shows the fans’ outrage over the cancellation has grown even more than GTA 6. There have also been reports that Sony had been planning this all-digital future for a while now, and has even closed the production factory.

With conditions like these, physical media preservation is more important than ever.

The uproar despite this has been immense, and fans have filed a petition for Sony to reverse its decision, which has over 90K signatures at this point. They have also been mass-cancelling PS Plus subscriptions as a protest.
