Sony Will Offer PS4 Games On The Go!

Story Highlight
  • Sony appears to be working on a new PlayStation handheld.
  • The handheld is said to be similar to the original PSP and reportedly offers PS4 game support.
  • Similar reports have shown up in the past, providing further evidence of Sony’s interest in handhelds.

The PlayStation Portable, also known as the PSP, will celebrate its 20th anniversary later this year. It was one of Sony’s most successful releases to date, selling over 82 million units.

Not too long ago, Sony tried to enter the handled market again with the PlayStation Portal, a streaming handheld launched last year. It seems the gaming giant has even more ambitious plans for handhelds, with reports pointing to the new PlayStation Portable.

Why it matters: Handheld gaming has become a lucrative option again, enticing all types of companies to try their hand at this segment.

Sony’s PSP Was Way Ahead Of Its Time

A ResetEra forum member recently reported that Russian journalist Anton Logvinov has pointed to a new PlayStation handheld. The same journalist previously broke the news that Sony would release PlayStation exclusive to PC years before its official announcement.

According to Anton Logvinov, Sony is working on a new PlayStation Portable capable of running PS4 games on the go. However, only the titles available on PC and the Steam Deck will be supported.

This is a strange limitation, possibly suggesting that the handheld uses a completely different architecture. Not too long ago, another leaker reported that PlayStation is working on a successor to the PS Vita.

Sony Sold Millions of PSPs

The leak suggests that PlayStation will offer per-game compatibility for this handheld. This would effectively mean that the gaming giant would have to create special ports for the system, much like it does for the PC platform.

Still, nothing has been confirmed, so it is worth taking the information with a grain of salt.

The handheld market has grown much bigger in recent years, and if PlayStation releases a new handheld, it could clash with the Nintendo Switch 2, which will likely dominate the market after its predecessor sold more than 140 million units.

Sony is also focused on the PS5 Pro, a console expected to launch later this year. Therefore, this supposed handheld is likely to be a year or two away, at the very least.
