PlayStation arguably has the richest and most diverse IP treasury in the gaming industry. However, the gaming giant has failed to utilise any of these franchises this generation, sidelining some while completely banishing others to the basement.
One such franchise is Killzone, which has unfortunately been pushed to the fringes due to the success of developer Guerrilla’s Horizon series. Fans have been asking Sony for ages to make a new title in the series, and as it turns out, that wish may be coming true sooner rather than later.
Why it matters: The lack of first-party games has been a major issue for the PS5 this generation, and Sony can prevent this problem for next-gen hardware by using one of its most prominent shooting IPs.
As reported by MP1st, Guerrilla Games is working with an external third-party studio on a brand-new Killzone project. According to sources with knowledge of the situation, this upcoming title will be a remake of an older game, with the franchise’s 2004 debut being the most likely candidate.
This Killzone project is in very early stages of production and was supposed to become Guerrilla’s primary focus after work on Horizon Hunters Gathering finished. However, due to the latter getting rebooted because of negative playtests, work on the remake has been delayed while developers fix Hunters Gathering.
Furthermore, the “remake” will most likely be a visual uplift of the original title rather than a complete reboot, although MP1st doesn’t rule that out, as the project is in very early stages of development. Rumblings also indicate that People Can Fly is the external studio co-developing this project, as it signed an agreement with PlayStation back in 2025 to produce a title codenamed Delta.
Fans have wanted the return of Killzone ever since Concord flopped back in 2024, and with reports suggesting Sony wants to revive some older PlayStation IPs, the timing has never been better for a Killzone comeback.
