GTA 5 Receives Unofficial Nintendo Switch Port Ahead of GTA 6 Release

We Got GTA 5 On Switch Before GTA 6!

Story Highlight
  • Modders have managed to get GTA 5 running natively on the original Nintendo Switch.
  • The game runs between 10 and 25FPS on the console, but an overclock can lead to 30FPS gameplay.
  • Rockstar Games will likely bring the game to the Nintendo Switch 2 at some point, but the original Switch is still unable to handle GTA 5.

Ahead of the upcoming GTA 6 release, Rockstar Games has sold over 200 million copies of GTA 5. The game is practically available on almost every platform out there today with the exception of the Nintendo Switch.

Modders previously got the game working on this console, but a new project has taken things one step further. GTA 5 now has its own unofficial port for the console.

Why it matters: The Nintendo Switch offers plenty of Rockstar Games titles already, including the GTA Trilogy and Red Dead Redemption. Many want to see both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 arrive on Nintendo hardware next.

Unlike the previous mod, this version of GTA 5 runs natively on the Nintendo Switch. Developed by Paralympics Productions, the port has been recompiled following source code leaks in 2023.

Footage of the game in action shows that GTA 5 runs at 10 to 25FPS on the base Nintendo Switch hardware. This explains why Rockstar Games never pursued an official version of the title, but things get interesting when a small overclock is added to the equation.

An overclocked Switch OLED can hit 30FPS quite consistently, though the performance can still drop depending on the scene and number of NPCs. Ultimately, this leads to performance more comparable to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game as opposed to the PS4 and Xbox One ports.

GTA 5 On The Switch Shows Interesting Results

Although GTA 5 never got an official release on the Nintendo Switch, fans can certainly expect the game to show up on the Nintendo Switch 2 at some point. Many even expect Red Dead Redemption 2 for the Nintendo Switch 2.

What are your thoughts on the unofficial recompilation project?
