Stay Tuned For New Game Announcement!

Story Highlight
  • A new Need for Speed game was in development last year.
  • EA and Criterion Games appear to be gearing up for an official reveal.
  • The developer has flown various content creators to its offices for feedback on the project.

Need for Speed Unbound has been on the market for over a year, finding varying degrees of success. While the game was a hit among the critics, its player count dropped rapidly after launch.

However, job listings from Criterion Games hinted that work on another game was already underway last year. This title appears to be gearing up for a new look soon, with the studio recently inviting top content creators for feedback.

Why it matters: Need for Speed is one of EA’s biggest franchises. While it might not be as popular today, each new release comes with the promise of bringing this arcade racing IP back to its former glory.

While he did not specifically state that the discussion involved a new entry, the fact that Criterion Games flew these personalities out to their offices suggests this is the case.

It is not rare for developers to involve content creators in early work on a project. However, this can be done through online meetings, so EA appears to be going the extra mile, hinting at another exciting racing game from the publisher.

Over on Reddit, content creators like BlackPanthaa have also been spotted at developer’s offices. This evidence begins to add up since the franchise has typically released games with two-year gaps, with last year’s Need for Speed Unbound being the recent exception.

Meanwhile, rumors from last year hinted at the possibility of a Need for Speed Most Wanted Remake from EA. This project would likely be more exciting than a new entry, though evidence of the remake remains slim at best since the initial rumors picked up the pace.

With Summer Game Fest and a slew of other showcases expected around June, as usual, the next Need for Speed game could race onto the scene during one of these events.

Fans remain cautiously optimistic about this entry. The lack of many arcade racing games has left fans starved for variety, with many hoping Need for Speed can bring some much-needed excitement to this genre from AAA developers.
