With GTA 6 right around the corner, the demand for consoles has predictably increased. Just like Strauss Zelnick predicted, both Xbox Series X|S and PS5 are highly wanted, and if the pre-order split is anything to go by, most players are choosing the latter to play GTA 6.
So far, the Rockstar title has made most of its pre-order revenue from the Sony console, while having a positive impact on its sales. Now, the demand for a PS5 is so high that even the Pro variant is now out of stock in Japan.
Why it matters: The Sony console being in such high demand despite the price tag is a testament to the hardware’s performance.
PlayStation has announced that the PS5 Pro is facing stock shortages in Japan and, as a result, the company is holding a lottery for a chance to purchase the hardware. To buy the PS5 Pro from Sony, fans need to submit an application that meets several criteria.
To be eligible, players need 60 hours or more of playtime in the last two years, either on the PS4 or PS5. Moreover, if the number of applications that fulfill the requirements exceeds the stock Sony has in store, a lottery will be held to decide whether you can buy the hardware.
Considering how the console has been through multiple price increases in the last year or so, now retailing for $900, this demand for the PS5 Pro is impressive. Moreover, the hardware also sold out at multiple retailers in the US as soon as the GTA 6 Extended look debuted on Netflix.
Previously, a poll suggested that 80% won’t buy Sony’s premium console offering just for GTA 6, but it seems like the demand is there.
