Hogwarts Legacy Became UK’s 3rd Biggest Switch Launch of 2023

Still No Game Awards Nomination!

Story Highlights
  • Hogwarts Legacy was recently released for the Nintendo Switch.
  • The game has already become the platform’s third biggest launch of 2023, losing only to Nintendo’s biggest first-party titles.
  • It is also the best-selling new IP of the year.

Hogwarts Legacy is one of the biggest releases of the year, and while the game was available on almost all platforms, the developers recently released the last port of the game.

Though recent Nintendo Switch ports like Mortal Kombat 1 have been terrible, Hogwarts Legacy looked decent compared to the PS5 version. Therefore, the game has become an immediate hit on this platform.

Thanks to the Nintendo Switch release, Hogwarts Legacy climbed back to the top position in the UK boxed charts. The game is also the third biggest Nintendo Switch launch of this year.

Why it matters: The Nintendo Switch had an extensive and diverse library in 2023, ranging from exclusives to third-party games.

Christopher Dring from GamesIndustry confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy fell just behind Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder in terms of launch performance this year.

While the others are two of Nintendo’s biggest mascots, Hogwarts Legacy’s third position is a big deal for this new IP. Unlike the others, the Harry Potter game was already available on other platforms for many months.

Still, the Nintendo Switch audience was keen to buy the game. The developers recently confirmed that this release is the best-selling new IP of 2023, making this launch even more substantial.

In addition to the Nintendo Switch, Hogwarts Legacy had a similarly massive launch on Steam, with nearly 900K concurrent players at its peak.

Despite all of the achievements mentioned above, the game was still not nominated in any category at The Game Awards, becoming one of the biggest snubs of the event. This has upset fans of the series, who are calling the game’s omission from the nominations an injustice.

Nonetheless, the game has undoubtedly been a success on the Nintendo Switch. While this version of Hogwarts Legacy comes with various loading screens, the compromises deliver a handheld Harry Potter experience for millions of Nintendo fans.
