Back in 2018, God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 were the two favorites for Game of the Year. While both games were considered excellent at the time, the latter arguably pushed the open-world genre forward.
Meanwhile, God of War stood out for reinvigorating a familiar franchise through a new take. Both games received various awards in different categories, but God of War took home the biggest award of the year. However, this decision did not satisfy everyone.
Five years later, the debate has emerged again, with many claiming that Rockstar’s 2018 release was the more deserving candidate since it nailed the writing, immersion, and open-world gameplay.
It was also a technical marvel, producing incredible results from the aging hardware of the consoles. All of these qualities led many to believe that no game would be able to challenge Red Dead Redemption 2 at the event.
