Huge Update For Base PS5 From Sony!

Story Highlight

  • Sony has announced QSSR for the PS5, a new tier of the PSSR AI-based upscaling.
  • QSSR will make its official debut today with Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei.
  • This new feature comes after many requested PSSR-level upscaling for the base console.

PlayStation’s work on PSSR and AI-based upscaling technology has been one of its the biggest assets to the PS5 Pro. In particular, continued improvements to the technology with PSSR 2.0 have been very impressive.

PlayStation has now confirmed that AI-based upscaling is also coming to the base PS5.

Why it matters: The base PS5 did not initially support AI-based upscaling due to its hardware limitations, since the console shipped with the older RDNA 2 AMD graphics architecture.

PlayStation describes this implementation as QSSR or Quick Spectral Super Resolution. As per PlayStation, this is a more streamlined version of the machine learning implementation that Sony and AMD previously collaborated on.

Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei are officially set to become the first two games to support QSSR on the base PS5, and these implementations will be available later today via an official update.

According to Insomniac Games, QSSR has allowed the team to bring a greater level of clarity and stability to Marvel’s Wolverine’s environments. Sucker Punch also says that QSSR brings out finer character and environmental detail in Ghost of Yotei.

Whether QSSR will outperform the traditional temporal solutions employed across most games on the base PS5 remains to be seen for now, but this initiative will certainly make base PS5 owners happy.

Further testing should reveal just how well the streamlined version of PSSR will stack up to the best implementations on the PS5 Pro.
