Starfield Player Count Drops; Averaging 30K Steam Players Now

Expert Verified By

Average Was At 50K Last Month!

Story Highlights
  • Starfield had an average of 50K players on Steam last month.
  • The player count is rapidly declining, with the game struggling to go above 30K players now.
  • RPGs like Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldur’s Gate 3 have left the game behind in terms of player count.

Starfield had a very strong strong in late August and early September. With the game reaching 6 million players in the first ten days, many had expected to see it continue this momentum after release.

Until recently, the game had managed to maintain around 50K players on Steam alone. However, it appears players are beginning to leave the RPG behind, as its average player count is down by 20K in a few weeks.

Why it matters: The declining player count may be concerning for Bethesda since the developer hoped people would continue to revisit the RPG for many years to come.

As per SteamDB, Starfield has 15.6K concurrent players currently active in the game.

However, the RPG used to reach peaks of 50K or more not too long ago. Looking at the data over the last week, the game has not peaked above 30K concurrent players on most days.

An exception can be seen during the weekend when the game reached over 40K concurrent players. Comparatively, Baldur’s Gate 3 is comfortably reaching over 130K players each day.

While it’s natural for a game to lose players over time, some fans consider these numbers disappointing for an anticipated release like Starfield since a title like Cyberpunk 2077 has managed to retain its recent audience.

While Cyberpunk 2077 was unanimously disliked at launch, recent changes and the positively received Phantom Liberty expansion have led to an average of 50K daily players for the game on Steam.

Over on Reddit, fans have discussed this drop in player count, pointing to the lack of replay value and various issues that have persisted since launch. While they pointed to multiple problems, one major complaint appears to revolve around the lack of content in the 1000 planets.

Nonetheless, Starfield is still doing better than many other games. Recent releases like Hogwarts Legacy had record-breaking launches, yet they could not retain players, losing most of them after the initial buzz died down.

In the last 24 hours, Hogwarts Legacy peaked at less than 11K concurrent players.

It is also important to note that, unlike many other games, Starfield is part of Xbox Game Pass. Therefore, a large audience for the game likely exists on this subscription and consoles.
