Spider-Man 2 Continues Record-Breaking Success, Selling 5 Million Units

5 Million Copies Sold In Just 11 Days!

Story Highlights
  • Spider-Man 2 is the biggest first-party PlayStation game so far.
  • It sold 2.5 million copies on launch day.
  • Another 2.5 million units were sold in the next 10 days, adding up to 5 million sales.

Insomniac has shaken the world with Spider-Man 2. Following much anticipation, the game launched to millions of excited PS5 owners, becoming PlayStation’s biggest first-party title to date.

However, this was just the beginning. In the days that followed, the Marvel character has reached millions of new consoles. Sony’s financial reports confirm that Spider-Man 2 has sold over 5 million units.

Why it matters: This figure is already significantly better than a recent PS5 exclusive like Final Fantasy 16, which has not received an updated figure after it sold 3 million units.

Sony confirms that Spider-Man 2 reached this milestone in just 11 days. Going by its previous figures, the game sold 2.5 million more copies in the next 10 days following launch.

Compared to a game like God of War Ragnarok, the latest PS5 exclusive has been left behind since the former was able to reach 5 million units sold in just 5 days. Still, this difference could be attributed to God of War Ragnarok’s cross-gen release.

While an exact comparison is difficult to make, its predecessor required around 90 days to reach 9 million sales. However, since then, Insomniac has become a household name for PlayStation and one of the most popular superhero game developers.

Therefore, Spider-Man 2 will likely reach 9 or 10 million sales much quicker. The former also launched to a larger audience since it was released late into the PS4 generation when adoption was already quite high.

Marvel's Spider-Man

Overall, Spider-Man 2 is still going strong. It is important to note that the game is Insomniac’s first 90/100 on Metacritic in many years.

This positive reception has played a major role in its success. Had the game launched on the PS4 like last year’s first-party releases, these record-breaking numbers would have been much higher.

However, given that it launched to less than 50 million PS5 owners, these results have been very impressive.

With the PS5 install-base growing gradually, a future sequel could see this series reaching new heights.

While Insomniac is currently moving its developers to complete Marvel’s Wolverine, the studio has already begun teasing future possibilities, pointing to a bigger role for Miles Morales and a potential Venom spin-off.
