Following the underwhelming performance of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, the shooting franchise is trying its best to return to form with Modern Warfare 4. Activision has confirmed that the title will not feature absurd skins like recent titles in the series and will also be playable offline for the first time in a while.
But Call of Duty’s comeback took a pretty hard hit on Steam, with the game’s beta being widely panned by players for serious gameplay issues and other bugs. As it turns out, however, Modern Warfare 4 might still turn out to be better than Black Ops 7, at least on the sales side.
Why it matters: Considering the negative response to its beta, the game has taken off incredibly well, and Activision needs to capitalise on the momentum by incorporating player feedback for launch.
According to analysis from Alinea Analytics, Modern Warfare 4 has sold almost 400k pre-order copies on Steam already, 2x more than the amount Black Ops 7 sold at release. The latest entry in the series has doubled the launch sales of Black Ops 7, grossing $21 million on Steam despite being two months away from hitting the shelves.
Modern Warfare 4’s beta has been panned by players, with gameplay elements like traversal and time-to-kill dividing the fanbase. However, as Alinea Analytics points out, fans still enjoyed the visuals and gunplay in the beta, taking the game to No. 1 on the Steam global top-sellers chart and helping it sell half a million copies.
Of course, there is still some work to be done to address fan complaints before Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23rd, 2026. But from the looks of it, the beta hasn’t hurt the ceiling of the game too much.
Moreover, Modern Warfare 4 will be the first Call of Duty title to launch on Nintendo Switch 2, meaning that Activision has tapped an untouched demographic that will surely boost sales.
