  • PlayStation is closely monitoring physical sales, especially as the Wolverine disc edition has sold well.

Sony has faced a lot of flak this year, with multiple controversial decisions ranging from ending disc production of first-party titles to ending Physint support. However, a new rumor suggests the company might withdraw its decision to end physical copies.

Trusted industry leaker Moore’s Law is Dead claims Sony has reportedly sent one of the biggest surveys to developers, asking them indirectly about their feedback on ending physical editions of first-party titles.

Why it matters: Disc editions of multiple games have been selling like hotcakes on PlayStation even after the disc cancellation announcement. Additionally, persistent backlash from fans and developers may push leadership to reconsider.

In a new video discussing various hardware topics, MLID reveals that Sony asked developers whether not selling disc editions is actually an issue for them.

There is a survey Sony sent out to developers that is, what I was told by my contacts. […] There was a question in it trying to ask in a not-direct way: ‘Is there an issue with not selling games physically.’

The company has reportedly started to notice that games like Astro Bot, Spider-Man 2, and Ghost of Yotei have sold pretty well physically.

Additionally, the disc edition of Marvel’s Wolverine also did relatively well in just the first 3 days, selling 22% physically out of 2 million sales, according to one source.

Moore argues that Sony may retract its earlier decision based on feedback from developers. It may consider an apology and delay ending disc versions, especially after a lot of fan surveys and backlash have requested the brand to reconsider as well.

Sony is starting to ask devs if they are worried about killing physical.

Sony PlayStation Physical Games
Sony’s decision drew a lot of backlash.

The situation is more dire than ever for PlayStation, especially as Xbox surveys users about whether Project Helix should have a disc drive, hinting at its decision to focus on physical game editions in the foreseeable future.

Sony might be forced to compete in its own way by reversing its earlier decision to end disc sales in the near future.
