Does BioWare Deserve Another Shot As An Independent Studio?

Story Highlight
  • Electronic Arts recently announced that it is closing its BioWare studio for good.
  • A Canadian politician wants the government to help the employees buy the studio from EA.
  • He says they know how to run the studio and make good games, so it would be the right call.

EA recently made headlines announcing that it’s laying off 400 employees and shutting down the BioWare studio. Swords of death had been hanging over the studio for a while, but following the Saudi takeover, it has now happened.

Despite the studio’s decline in quality, fans aren’t thrilled with this decision. A Canadian politician has even called on the government to help the BioWare employees buy the studio from EA and run it themselves.

Why it matters: In hindsight, this sounds like a good idea, especially if EA doesn’t intend to keep the Mass Effect and Dragon Age IPs alive; however, many technical hurdles could make this a tricky affair.

The developers at BioWare know how to run the studio. They know how to make the games we all love. They should be given the first opportunity – and the federal support – to buy it and run it themselves.

Canadian New Democratic Party (NDP) leader, Avi Lewis, called out EA for buying up businesses and running them into the ground. He proposed that BioWare should be handed over to its employees to run the studio.

He continued that the developers at the studio know how to run it and how to make games that people love, and the federal government should help them buy BioWare. However, this isn’t as simple as it seems.

Bioware Shut Down

For one, EA hasn’t shown any intention of selling BioWare. Further, we don’t know if they plan on selling the IPs or just discontinuing them. Fans even think that using public funds for this isn’t really the best idea.

Then there is the state of the studio in recent years. Their last real big hits came in the 2010s, and since then it has been underwhelming. The last title, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is specifically what made things worse.
