Activision is  being handed control of Halo, and the publisher has declared the bold aim of making the series’ greatest game ever. Not much else is known about Activision’s plans for Halo, but an insider suggests that Activision will completely reboot the series.

Why it matters: Halo has a rich legacy dating back to the early 2000s, so a reboot would be a huge change for the series, one that many not sit well with everyone.

Why it matters: The franchise has been built up and expanded over multiple decades, so Activision completely rebooting everything might prove to be a divisive change.

As stated by Technical Halo, Halo under Activision will mark a new era for the franchise. What this means is that the gaming giant will effectively disregard all past Halo games to establish a completely fresh universe and vision for the IP.

Activision will likely retain some elements of the series, such as Master Chief’s iconic design and other characters like Cortana, Sergeant Johnson, etc. Perhaps the gaming giant will reboot Halo in a similar manner to the Modern Warfare saga, which was was rebooted in 2019.

A Halo reboot could also fundamentally alter how the series plays, possibly bringing it in line with more modern first-person shooters.

Of course, Halo has changed directions more than a few times, especially following Bungie’s departure. Therefore, it will be interesting to see what Activision brings to the table with Xbox’s most iconic IP.
