Halo has gone through its biggest change recently, shifting hands from Halo Studios to Activision Blizzard.

While the latter now aims to create the best game in the series, Halo Studios’ future remains uncertain. Following several hundred layoffs, Halo Studios is said to have been reduced to a mere 20 developers.

Why it matters: Halo Studios has gone through many changes and revamps over the years, and until recently, the team was positioned as one of Xbox’s premier developers.

According to a report, Halo Studios has been hit so hard by layoffs that only around 20 developers remain on the Halo team.

These developers have been relegated to support roles, with Activision Blizzard confirmed to take the lead role moving forward. Activision is now creating a brand new team to work on a brand new Halo title.

Of course, this is a huge deal. The Halo developer, formerly known as 343 Industries, employed nearly 1,000 developers not too long ago. To see the team stripped down to just 20 developers means that it could be completely shuttered in the near future.

Despite its size, Halo Studios relied on extensive support from external teams. This is precisely why a project like Halo Campaign Evolved saw the involvement of thousands of developers across various external teams.

This may have been one reason Xbox decided to move forward with completely abandoning Halo Studios. Still, it’s sad to see the team that was handling Halo since 2012’s Halo 4 go out in such an abrupt manner.
