Similarities

AMD likes to launch different processors mainly for their processor and thread count differences. Most of the other stuff remains the same. However, things are a bit different in this case. We are talking about a jump in the whole generation of architecture. As a result, you’ll be surprised to see that there are more differences than similarities.

However, there are similarities and let’s begin with the process size of 7 nm on both processors. The I/O process size of 12 nm is also the same on both CPUs from AMD, which means they are both pretty fast and very power-efficient

Another similarity between the two, which you can also call a major similarity, is the L3 cache. The L3 Cache size on both CPUs is 32 MB, which is pretty good, and we can definitely expect some good frame rate performance from both in our gaming benchmarks.

They both support DDR4 memory, the maximum speed of the memory being 3200 MHz. Also, you can replace one for another because they both use the AM Socket AM4. That’s pretty much where the similarities between these two processors come to an end.

If you were really trying to prove them to be similar, you could state a few other things, such as their overclock-ability. You can overclock them both, and the good news is that the multiplier on both CPUs is unlocked.

Differences

Let’s come to the more important and interesting part. Why is it the more interesting part? Well, these two processors are different from one another on many accounts. You could begin by talking about the architecture on both, with 3800x carrying Zen 2 and 5600x carrying Zen 3 architecture.

On any given day, if you use the same setup, you can easily expect up to 15% improved performance from Zen 3 architecture compared to Zen 2 architecture. What makes things even better from Ryzen 7 3800x is its higher number of cores and threads. On Ryzen 7 3800x, you get 8 cores and 16 threads.

Compared to that, Ryzen 5 5600x offers you only 6 cores and 12 threads. However, there is no doubt that Ryzen 5 5600x makes up for that difference with its improved architecture and 4150 million transistors compared to 3800 million on Ryzen 7 3800x.

The base and boost clock difference isn’t big enough to highlight, but since you can go from 3.7 GHz (base clock) to 4.6 GHz on Ryzen 5 5600x, you have more overclocking room on this processor. Contrarily, you have Ryzen 7 3800x offering you a base clock of 3.9 GHz and a boost clock of 4.5 GHz

Ryzen 5 5600x also offers you PCIe 4.0, and 24-lane compatibility compared to 20-lane compatibility on Ryzen 7 3800x. One downside of Ryzen 7 3800x is its TDP of 105 W compared to only 65 W on Ryzen 5 5600. A slight bump in heat inside your case, maybe?

If you do feel your case is running extremely hot on the inside, you might consider installing a liquid-based CPU cooler. Here’s a cool guide on installing a liquid CPU cooler for you.

Last but not least, let’s not forget the price difference. Ryzen 7 3800x launched at $400, whereas the launch price of Ryzen 5 5600x is only $300. What does that price difference mean? We’ll surely find out in gaming and productivity benchmarks.

Ryzen 7 3800x Vs Ryzen 5 5600x: Gaming Benchmarks

Specifications on paper can only matter so much. When you look at a spec sheet, take it as someone making verbal claims. You have to land them in a real fight to see how good they are. That’s where benchmarks come in for processors and GPUs.

You might have a CPU outshining the other one in terms of specifications but losing badly when you review its real-world performance. We’ll test these two processors based on their gaming and productivity benchmarks to ensure that you get your hands on the processor that gives you great real-world performance.

From their per-second frame generation to compression and decompression speeds, we’ll look at everything before allowing one to wear the championship belt. So, without waiting any further, let’s get into the benchmarks.

The first thing to make sure of here is to keep the setup identical for both CPUs to see how well they perform. At the same time, we must not forget that the GPU you have on your computer might also affect the results when you play the same games on your PC.

However, for the most part, the performance trends and patterns should be the same for both processors because they are both being given a level playing field. We have tested Ryzen 7 3800x vs Ryzen 5 5600x in 10 games at 1080p resolution.

  • The difference further reduced from 5 FPS to 3 FPS after overclocking when 5600x scored 60 FPS and 3800x scored 57 FPS.

Overall Productivity Performance

It was quite a leveled performance from both CPUs as they continued to go back and forth in various productivity tests. It was proven repeatedly that Ryzen 5 5600x is the better CPU when it comes to tasks that can be performed with the involvement of just one core

On the other hand, if you are doing tasks involving multiple cores to take up the workload, you are better off with Ryzen 7 3800x. Ryzen 7 3800x continued to outperform it in multiple benchmark tests when multiple cores were tested.

Another thing that became quite clear in these tests was the difference in performance after overclocking. Despite the fact that they both have unlocked overlocking and multiplier, the difference in performance after overclocking wasn’t huge

For example, considering the data we obtained from our Blender Ryzen 7 3800x Vs Ryzen 5 5600x benchmark test, Ryzen 7 3800x took 918 seconds to perform a task at base clock speed. When the clock speed was boosted, it performed the same task in 899 seconds. The time did reduce, but only by 19 seconds.

This could mean that you benefit from overlocking more in games than you do in productivity tasks.

Pricing And Availability

At the time of launch, Ryzen 7 3800x was $100 more expensive than its rival Ryzen 5 5600x. It launched for $400, whereas AMD launched Ryzen 5 5600x for $300. The more surprising part is that Ryzen 5 5600x was launched later, so its lower price brings more value than ever.

In a way, Ryzen 5 5600x offers much more value for your money because you can overlock it to obtain a much better gaming performance than Ryzen 7 3800x. Looking at the current prices on Amazon, it is clear that Ryzen 7 3800x has gone down greatly in price.

The one problem you’ll face is its availability. It is hardly available on Amazon on other platforms. For this reason, you might get it for $350, but no less than that. The price should have gone down more in two and a half years, but the difference of $50 isn’t that huge

On the other hand, you have Ryzen 5 5600x, which is also 2 years old and has experienced a bigger price drop. You can easily find it on Amazon for as low as $160. That’s nearly a 50% drop in price

With a little bit of tweaking and overclocking, it’s quite possible for you to get the same level of performance from your Ryzen 5 5600x as Ryzen 7 3800x.
