PS6 Won’t Launch With Less Than 30GB RAM, Says Leaker

Sony Unlikely To Make Major Compromises!

Story Highlight
  • Ongoing memory shortages have prompted discussions of Sony cutting down the RAM in the PS6 ahead of its launch.
  • A prominent leaker argues that the console will not launch with less than 30GB of memory.
  • He also suggests that Sony could launch the PS6 handheld before the home console if the situation worsens further.

As the 9th console generation draws to a close, discussions have shifted to the upcoming release of the PS6. According to Sony, the company has yet to decide on a release window for the console, and things are made more complicated by the ongoing memory shortages.

On this subject, a leaker recently discussed whether Sony would be willing to significantly cut down the PS6’s memory in order to deal with the situation. According to a source, the PS6 will likely ship with at least 30GB of memory.

Why it matters: PlayStation doubled the memory over the last generation with the PS5, and many expect this trend to continue with the PS6 despite the ongoing memory shortages.

Reliable leaker Kepler recently discussed the possibility of Sony cutting the PS6’s memory to 24GB in order to bring the manufacturing costs down.

He argued that the cut-down memory would not be ideal, but it would be the most obvious compromise for PlayStation to bring down costs. In response, leaker Moore’s Law is Dead argued that the PS6 would not ship with less than 30GB of memory.

He pointed out that Sony was able to manage inventory and chip shortages during the pandemic to keep the PS5 reasonably priced. All of this was done without making any significant hardware sacrifices at the time.

Moore’s Law is Dead believes the same will be the case for the PS6. Moreover, the leaker mentioned that Sony would likely lead with the PS6 handheld in 2027, which is expected to feature 24GB of RAM, if the situation were truly dire.

This would allow the gaming giant to conserve the current memory target without downgrading the PS6 home console.

The PS6 Is Rumored To Launch In 2027 or 2028

As a reminder, leaks suggest the PS6 home console will launch with a 10 Zen 6 cores CPU (8 Zen 6c + 2 Zen 6 LP) and a 54CU RDNA 5 GPU. On the memory front, leaks suggest a 30-40GB target.
