Ubisoft Reiterates Digital Games Are Just Licenses Amid Ongoing Lawsuit Over The Crew

Story Highlight
  • Ubisoft is currently facing a lawsuit after removing The Crew from gamers’ libraries.
  • The company’s lawyers argue that gamers were never led to believe they would own the game forever.
  • They further state that digital games are comparable to limited-time licenses.

Ubisoft’s The Crew series is home to over 40 million players, but fans were upset when the first game was forcefully removed from libraries earlier last year. This led to a lawsuit from the fans, which pointed to a potential violation of California’s consumer protection laws.

Nearly a year after the story took everyone by storm, Ubisoft’s internal response to the lawsuit has surfaced. As per the gaming giant’s lawyers, it never led gamers to believe that their purchase was permanent.

Why it matters: Digital libraries and ownership of games have become major talking points in the industry recently, and this situation highlights exactly why many are so concerned about the future of game distribution.

The Crew
The Crew Was Permanently Removed From Libraries And Taken Offline

As per Polygon, Ubisoft’s lawyers stated that players had no reason to believe that purchasing The Crew granted them “unfettered ownership rights in the game.”

They went on to say that Ubisoft had already clarified that The Crew’s purchase was little more than a limited access license, nullifying the lawsuit’s argument altogether.

Although the gamers later modified the lawsuit in response, Ubisoft’s lawyers remained firm that the argument was rather weak. Nonetheless, everyone seems to have taken an interest in the stance regarding digital games.

Of course, these words did not come from Ubisoft directly, but they represent the company’s greater mindset. As far as the French gaming giant is concerned, digital game sales are akin to temporary licenses.

Ubisoft Has Sold Millions of Games Worldwide, So Ownership Could Pose A Problem Moving Forward

Many may mistake them for permanent ownership, but Ubisoft argues otherwise. The company has also warned audiences to become accustomed to not owning games in the past, further highlighting this mindset.

Sony Has Confirmed Increasing PS Plus Price For 15 Countries

Story Highlight
  • Sony has confirmed that it will be increasing the price of all PS Plus tiers in 15 countries.
  • The countries that will be affected are Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.
  • This change will be made starting April 16, 2025.

Sony has always been criticised for increasing the price of its subscription service. Paying to play online is already pretty controversial, so price hikes are never welcome. Sony previously increased the PS Plus price, which angered a massive fandom

The company doesn’t seem to have learned anything from the last backlash, as it is yet again increasing the price of all of its tiers. Sony has confirmed that it will be increasing the price of all tiers of PS Plus on April 16, 2025, in 15 Latin American countries.

Why it matters: Given how the subscription services of consoles are treated, this new price hike is sure to attract criticism.

The countries that will be affected by the price are the following:

  • Argentina
  • Bolivia
  • Chile
  • Colombia
  • Costa Rica
  • Ecuador
  • El Salvador
  • Guatemala
  • Honduras
  • Mexico
  • Nicaragua
  • Panama
  • Paraguay
  • Peru
  • Uruguay

In a new blog post, Sony has tried to justify the price hike by saying the increase is due to global market conditions.

Like many companies around the world, we continue to be impacted by global market conditions and will be adjusting our local PlayStation Plus pricing.

This pricing adjustment will allow us to continue offering high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription.

Those who already have the subscription won’t be affected by the price until their next billing date, which occurs on or after June 24. That said, if someone makes changes like stacking the subscription after April 16, they will be affected by the price change

For new users, the price will be the following for each tier:

  • PlayStation Plus Essential:
    1 month: $7.99|3 months: $20.99|12 months: $64.99
  • PlayStation Plus Extra:
    1 month: $11.99|3 months: $33.99|12 months: $107.99
  • PlayStation Plus Deluxe:
    1 month: $13.99|3 months: $39.99|12 months: $124.99

Naughty Dog Confirms The Last of Us Part 3 Is Not In The Works

Story Highlight
  • Naughty Dog says The Last of Us Part 3 is not in the works.
  • Director Neil Druckmann states that there is no secret outline for the game.
  • The team is currently busy with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Naughty Dog has recently revealed a brand new IP, but fans are also interested in revisiting The Last of Us. This iconic franchise has only received re-releases for the past five years, creating speculation about a potential third game.

Although leaks have suggested that the third part is already in the works, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann previously suggested otherwise. In a recent interview, he again confirmed that the game is not in development.

Why it matters: Naughty Dog typically makes multiple entries for its biggest IPs, so fans hope to see more than two games for The Last of Us.

When asked to discuss The Last of Us Part 3, Neil Druckmann highlighted how he treats each project at Naughty Dog as his last. This means each game has a definitive ending, even if it receives a sequel later.

He also stated that the team does not like to force sequels and only makes them when there is a proper story to be told. As for The Last of Us Part 3, Neil Druckmann states that nothing related to the project is currently in active development.

His current time is spent working on The Last of Us’ TV series, which was recently renewed for a new season. The studio is also fully dedicated to making Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as successful as possible.

At Naughty Dog, we are working on Integalactic. That has taken up all our time.

Between these projects, director Neil Druckmann has been unable to give much thought to The Last of Us Part 3. He even stated that there is no secret outline for the game.

The Last of Us Part 2 Region Locked PC
The Last of Us Part 2 Was Recently Released On PC

Although Neil Druckmann’s statement could be meant to throw fans off, it’s clear that the game, if it does happen, won’t arrive for many more years. Naughty Dog already spent seven years to release the second Last of Us title, and it seems the third will take even longer.

What are your thoughts on these details? Let’s discuss this in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.

Marathon Confirmed Playable On Xbox Without PSN Account

Story Highlight
  • PlayStation previously implemented account restrictions for its first-party titles on other platforms.
  • Marathon breaks away from this trend and will not require a PlayStation account on Xbox or other platforms.
  • The game could still require a Bungie account for the best experience.

Bungie’s Marathon is set to receive a slew of new details later this week. The official gameplay reveal arrives on April 12, and Bungie has already started to reveal small snippets of information ahead of this date.

Among the more interesting pieces of information, the team has now confirmed that no PlayStation account will be required to play Marathon.

Why it matters: Forced account logins are becoming increasingly common for multiplayer games, so fans have been concerned about Bungie’s approach.

The latest information comes directly from Bungie developers, who confirm that Marathon will not force users to sign into PlayStation Network. Bungie has yet to confirm whether its own account will be mandatory, but players can look back on Destiny 2 for potential answers.

Destiny 2 already supports cross-play and cross-saves. The former is accessible without a Bungie.net account, though registration is necessary for cross-saves. As such, the same could be the case for Marathon.

It will also be interesting to see whether Marathon avoids PlayStation’s regional restrictions on platforms like PC. Although restrictions for first-party titles have been lifted, recent titles like The Last of Us Part 2 are still locked in unsupported regions.

Marathon Is Going The Extraction Route

The answers to all these questions and more should be revealed on April 12. Fans can also expect pricing information, with the game expected to cost $40 at release.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Voted PlayStation Players’ Choice for March 2025

Story Highlight
  • Assassin’s Creed was the top new release for PlayStation in March 2025.
  • The game faced minimal competition, with Split Fiction being its only major contender.
  • Assassin’s Creed Shadows has a bright future ahead with big plans from Ubisoft.

Despite a huge backlash from the public, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been considered a success in Ubisoft’s books. The newest RPG broke multiple records for the franchise and reached 3 million players within just a week.

While numbers alone don’t guarantee a game’s success, public opinion also seems to be in favor of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. PlayStation players voted the RPG as their choice for March’s new releases, surpassing even critically acclaimed titles like Split Fiction.

Why it matters: Many doubted Ubisoft’s ability to make a great Assassin’s Creed game again. However, the mass appeal seems to be leaning in favor of Assassin’s Creed Shadows as a strong entry in the series.

Following February, March didn’t have many heavy hitters, with the competition just being between Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Split Fiction. However, Split Fiction’s perfect critic scores still couldn’t guarantee its victory over Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows being March’s best new release for PlayStation is also surprising, considering how much its sales have lagged behind on the platform. Just a month after its release, the RPG didn’t even appear in the PlayStation’s top 171 sellers.

Claws Of Awaji Is Just The Start Of Ubisoft’s Plan For AC Shadows

The French publisher has big plans for the game now that they’re past its pressured release. The developer team of the game stated, “This is just the beginning” for Shadows, as Ubisoft plans to evolve the game in the long term.

Ubisoft is expected to release the first expansion for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, titled “Claws of Awaji,” soon. Claws of Awaji promises a new region and 10+ hours of new content with new weapons and will continue Naoe and Yasuke’s story after it was left on a cliffhanger with the main game’s ending.

Witcher Spin-Off Project Sirius Will Be “One For The Books”, Claims Ex-Designer

Story Highlight
  • The ex-design director of Project Sirius teased a bright future for the multiplayer title.
  • The game will be “one for the books”, according to him.
  • Project Sirius had a rocky start under The Molasses Flood but will be back on track with CDPR following their merger.

The Witcher franchise is set to see a surge in new releases, with CDPR working on multiple new entries. Among these announced titles is Project Sirius, a multiplayer Witcher project.

CDPR hasn’t disclosed many details regarding the game, but Project Sirius’ ex-design director has teased a bright future for the game

Why it matters: The Witcher franchise has been regarded as one of the best RPG franchises of all time. Expectations for the future entries are high, and such claims ensure that CDPR won’t be letting Witcher fans down.

The Witcher 4
Project Sirius Will Target A Much Broader Audience

In a new LinkedIn post, Damian Isla, Project Sirius’ ex-designer, had this to say.

It’s going to be an amazing game, one for the books

Damian worked on the project for the last 3 years as a design director before he departed the studio recently.

Moreover, the studio The Molasses Flood, which developed the game, was recently absorbed into CDPR. CDPR had only overseen the project previously, but now they’ll take over the title entirely.

Project Sirius did face a rocky development that even led to layoffs for its studio and a reboot of the game. However, the multiplayer title is now back on track and will be developed under a new framework.

The Witcher 4
CDPR Will Avoid Repeating The Same Mistakes They Made With Cyberpunk 2077 In Future Projects

Project Sirius will offer a unique experience within the Witcher universe as job listings revealed co-op and PvE elements for the game. Additionally, procedural generation was also teased, promising much more replayability and individualized interactions every time.

Project Sirius will be developed on Unreal Engine 5, but a release date for the title hasn’t been set in stone yet. With a much more recent reboot, the game could still be years away and will potentially launch after Witcher 4, which is expected in 2027.

What are your expectations for Project Sirius? Let us know in the comments below, or join the discussion at the official Tech4Gamers Forums.

Witcher Spin-Off Project Sirius Studio Fully Absorbed Into CDPR As Co-Founder Departs

Story Highlight
  • The Molasses Project, the studio developing the multiplayer Witcher Project Sirius, has been absorbed into CDPR.
  • The co-founder of the studio won’t follow the integration.
  • CDPR taking over Project Sirius implies good things for the multiplayer title.

After such a long hiatus with the mainline Witcher series, CDPR is working on multiple new entries, starting with Witcher 4. While Ciri is getting her own trilogy, Multiple other games within the franchise, including The Witcher 1’s remake and Project Sirius, a spin-off multiplayer game, are being developed.

The Molasses Flood, a studio of veteran developers working on Project Sirius, was acquired by CDPR in 2021. The studio has now announced a complete merger with CDPR.

Why it matters: A merger this late into the spin-off’s development implies that the game’s development hasn’t been going smoothly. CDPR previously only provided support to the studio, but it seems they will take over the project completely.

The Molasses Flood Announcing Merger With CDPR

The merger was announced on April 1 on The Molasses Flood’s official website. The notice also confirmed that this merger wouldn’t affect the distribution of the Drake Hollow and The Flame in The Flood video games that the studio owns.

The studio’s co-founder Damian Isla also shared his thoughts on this merger, calling it a good and healthy thing for the studio. Additionally, this absorption was long-expected and the studio would do better under CDPR’s helm.

However, Damian Isla will be departing the studio and won’t follow this integration but was surprised how The Molasses Flood, a small studio, survived the hostile industry competition for over a decade.

As for Project Sirius, CDPR’s full takeover does imply better things for the game, especially given its rough development, which resulted in the game’s reboot and layoffs for The Molasses Flood in 2023.

What are your thoughts on this merger? Do you think Project Sirius will be handled better under CDPR? Let us know in the comments below or head towards the official Tech4Gamers Forums.

Switch 2 and GTA 6 Expected to Boost Gaming Market to $92.7 Billion by 2027

Story Highlight
  • A recent report suggests that Switch 2 and GTA 6 will boost the games industry’s growth.
  • The games industry revenue is projected to reach $92.7 billion by 2027.
  • The PC market is expected to grow by 2.6%, while the console market will grow by 7.0%.

The year 2025 is going to be memorable for the gaming industry. The year will see the release of the most anticipated titles, GTA 6 and Switch 2, which were also recently confirmed to be coming later this year.

Following these massive announcements, a recent report suggests that Switch 2 and GTA 6 will likely boost the games industry’s revenue to $92.7 billion by 2027.

Why it matters: While gaming industry revenue has stagnated since the pandemic, it appears the industry will finally see huge growth in the coming years.

Newzoo Latest Report
Newzoo Latest Report Suggests Great Time Ahead For Gaming Industry.

The above-pasted screenshot from the latest Newzoo report shows that the gaming industry was doing much better before the pandemic, jumping from $67 billion in 2019 to $80 billion in just a year.

Since then, the numbers have stagnated for four years, but the games industry’s revenue has finally started to grow. As reported, the industry revenue will reach a record $92 billion by 2027.

It has also been projected that PC growth in the coming years will be 2.6%, while console growth will be 7.0%. Of course, these wouldn’t be possible without the launch of the most anticipated GTA 6 and Switch 2.

GTA 6
The upcoming Grand Theft Auto title might be the industry’s saviour.

The report further suggested that from January 2021 to December 2024, around 10 games frequently made up 50 % of all playtime across all platforms, including Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox, GTA 5, and others.

It has also been suggested that newer games struggle to get playtime from PC players, as many established games already exist. However, console players are more into playing newer titles, with PlayStation having the highest playtime rates for recent titles.

Nevertheless, are you excited about Switch 2 and GTA 6? Do you think they’ll help grow the gaming industry in the coming years? Let us know your thoughts in the comments, or join the Tech4Gamers forums.

Ubisoft Stock Has Plummeted To Its Lowest Value In Over A Decade

Story Highlight
  • Ubisoft’s stock price has crumbled to €8 per share, its lowest since 2013.
  • The company’s current value is starkly different from last year’s.
  • Its share value dropped another 33% at the start of 2025.

To call Ubisoft’s recent history a rough patch would be an understatement. Many of the company’s big AAA titles, including Star Wars: Outlaws and Skull & Bones, failed to meet expectations. The recent release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows did steady the ship a bit.

However, the impact wasn’t large enough for Ubisoft to sustain itself. It had to partner up with Tencent in a new deal and give up some control of its premiere AAA franchises, which is not reflecting well in the stock market.

Why it matters: A constant decline in value could result in the end of Ubisoft, especially with Tencent now owning parts of its major IPs.

Ubisoft stock
Ubisoft’s stock isn’t having an easy time right now.

Ubisoft’s stock is the lowest since 2013, with its price going below €8 per share, an 8% decrease from last Friday. The value has since rebounded to €8.96, but to put this drop into perspective, the gaming giant’s share value has dropped another 33% since January 1, 2025

Furthermore, compared to the company’s peak in 2018, which was €94, the share price has fallen a whopping €86 in the seven-year duration and was €23 just last year. Hence, the Tencent deal hasn’t had the impact Ubisoft hoped for.

Many also think that the new tariffs imposed by the US government contributed to this, but the stock value started declining a day after the Tencent deal was announced.

Assassin's Creed Shadows
Even Assassin’s Creed Shadows performing couldn’t help Ubisoft a lot.

Even the relative success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows hasn’t helped Ubisoft’s standing on the stock market, with the value crumbling even after the game’s positive commercial and critical performance.

The industry has labelled the new partnership between Ubisoft and Tencent as beneficial, but with employees facing layoffs, only time will tell how it pans out. As for now, Ubisoft shares are the cheapest they have ever been, so it would be a good time to invest.

Do you think Ubisoft will bounce back from this financial ruin? Tell us in the comments below, or visit the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.

Titanfall 3 Reportedly Built On Unreal Engine 5 And Follows Live Service Model

Story Highlight
  • Reports suggest Titanfall 3 is in the works and will launch next year.
  • The game is said to be taking a live-service approach and using Unreal Engine 5.
  • Respawn has also created a single-player campaign despite the live-service focus.

Update:

Reliable leaker Jeff Grubb has stated that the below-mentioned report is inaccurate. However, he also noted that Titanfall creator Steve Fukuda likely has a prototype based on the franchise hidden somewhere.

This could lead to the series’ return in the future, but it seems the long-anticipated revival is not happening anytime soon.

Original Story:

Respawn, the team behind iconic first-person shooters like Titanfall and Apex Legends, is said to be working on a new game set in the Titanfall universe. Amid the excitement, an insider recently stated that Titanfall 3 is in the works.

Elaborating on this report, the same source has now provided additional details regarding Titanfall 3, claiming that the game is being built using Unreal Engine 5.

Why it matters: Titanfall 3 would be a breath of fresh air for Respawn and the first-person shooter market, considering recent disappointing releases from major IPs in the genre.

Titanfall 3 Details
Titanfall 3 Details via Twitter

As per Osvaldatore, the development of Titanfall 3 is almost complete. The insider previously stated that the game would launch in 2026, and he now describes a live-service focus for the series’ third entry.

This focus will see Respawn introducing battle passes and extraction game modes to the franchise. Characters from Apex Legeds are also said to be making their debut in the series.

Although the past games did not boast a lot of longevity, Respawn has gained plenty of experience with live-service gaming over the last few years. Therefore, Titanfall 3 could thrive as a part of this market.

Despite the live-service focus, Titanfall 3 is also said to come with a single-player campaign, a wise decision after the widespread criticism of the first game’s lack of single-player content.

Titanfall 2
Titanfall 2 Was Released Nearly A Full Decade Ago

Although Respawn has yet to comment on Titanfall’s future, the team previously teased a return to the IP. Fan demand for Titanfall 3 has also existed for a while, so an official announcement could take the gaming industry by storm in the near future.

What are your thoughts on Respawn taking a live-service approach to Titanfall 3? Let’s discuss this in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
